Have you tried therapy? I've been doing it and feel like my therapist sort of expects me to have very predictable reactions to his suggestions and I regret opening up to him sometimes.

Extremely unhelpful. One of them wanted me to have ECT right off the bat and i bailed and the other one was judgemental as hell. So I gave up and decided to face failure head on. Once I was whacked twice or thrice I just got used to it and am better now. Exercising and keeping yourself occupied also helps

I feel like a lot of people dislike therapy because their therapist doesn't "agree" with everything you do in your life, and that's a problem. You're there to be challenged and to reflect as well, not to have someone cuddle you.

Nah all my therapists have been a "how does that make you feel?" type of person. Like ***** I feel ******* insane tell me something to do about it!!!!!

It's been a decade since I went, she was a sweet lady, but it felt no different than talking to a teacher who tells you that you had it rough and everything is going to be okay. Maybe that helps some people, but looking back, I don't think that was what I needed.

Maybe specialized therapy would be more helpful to me.

I opened up about things in my past to explain myself in present day and he's basically saying to just focus on the now… like why am I talking to you if I can't bring up things from the past???

I would say yes. I'm working on my music. I'm not bombarding my exes and celebrities with messages. I can sit in a chair sober and not just thinking about getting high. I'm not contracting chlamydia from people 2000 feet away. So maybe it's working.

I wouldn't say meh but it was "somewhat helpful" it's not a miracle cure because you have to do your part too, but it helps you to get out of a negative loop and you can get some pretty good advice on how to handle whatever it is that's going on in your life, get a different perspective on things.

Better than medication imo, unless you feel like you need it in addition to therapy

Interesting thread. I'm just thinking about going to therapy for the first time. But there's always that fear of whether they'll understand me.

It was ok but I felt like she placed a moral judgment on a lot of **** I did. Ex) I sold an essay to a friend in college & she flipped **** on me like I'd committed a huge ethical violation. But I'd explained that I'd been wait listed for the course & told to complete the 1st assignment as if I would make it into the class. I complete this essay & then I got shafted from the class. There was literally no way for anybody to know that I wrote it. She still let me have it. After that, I always got major narc vibes from her & only showed her parts of my personality that didn't make me feel ashamed. I would consider going back now (to somebody new!) & being more headstrong about who I am & what my values are. I'm not trying to be moulded by a stranger into the person they think I need to be! Idc if they like me or not, I want to like myself

Sometimes it takes several sessions to form a relationship with your therapist. I've had 5 therapists since 2022 and I feel like I looked forward to my sessions with each one, but I had a totally different relationship with each therapist. It was worth it cuz I got a diagnosis and was able to share things that nobody else but me understood. Things that I can talk about with my therapist that I would share with other people and they'd call me crazy or not understand. But it's your therapist's job to put in the effort to understand and help you.

Absolutely.

But you really have to find someone you click with.  Like all professions everyone is not going to be good at their job.

Yup.  My sister would fall into that category.  Therapy was not for her because she never wanted to hear that she was responsible for anything negative in her life.

no. granted, I need a new therapist stat. the thing is, if we're looking at my overall history, it's gotta be a no. I've had plenty of different therapists but

Spoiler

I can only think of 1 in particular who I really liked. the rest all just… were either so placid and fairweather and didn't PUSH or ended our time together with "we are not friends, Joe." out of f*cking nowhere like I asked if we were :deadbanana4: I just… need. NEED. someone who will push the f*ck out of me in a more loving way. I need pushback instead of just "oh okay :)" no. f*ck that. literally ghosted my last therapist for that lol. he was too… my age, first of all. also he was kinda bearish and cute and reminded me of my ex boyfriend which DIDN'T help. but I need someone who is way older, will poke me and piss me off (like genuinely I NEED the "okay yeah. Joe you are the problem." instead of just calmness), and will really point out how to solve so much of my guilt or how to help me reckon with it better. so many past therapists have just been like "oh, hypersexuality? that's just your sexual trauma! here are other coping mechanisms… have any ideas?" no. what I'd prefer is someone who'd tell me like… "well, let's dive in. yes, sexual trauma. but what else? possible elements of narcissism and your mommy issues and your inferiority complex and yadda yadda yadda you need to start at …" like give me more! ffs! I need a therapist who isn't afraid to give me more! it's so hard to find those though idk :michael:

Spoiler

additionally, I feel like my last two therapists were so particular about always needing me to have biweekly at least meetings… no. I think a once per month therapy session situation would be so much better. I don't need to see someone every other week. sometimes I'll have a fortnight of nothing. 0. nothing happening at all. gimme monthly so we can catch up and I can have a more natural yap session

but like truth be told I absolutely need a new therapist! my psychiatrist is a queen and I love ha but I need therapy too so that I can… really spill it all again and find ways to work on myself. I'm not nearly as productive musically as I should be, I need to still be a bit more assertive even though I've grown in that realm quite a bit over my 20s, and I need to really fix my life in a lot of ways. I need to get back on zocdoc and start looking tbh :giraffe:

the thing is with me is i'm so sensitive but I still do need the tough love sometimes. I don't change without it sometimes cause I'm so stubborn. idk! like tell me how I f*cked up

My therapist often reminds me; I'm not your friend. This is not a friendly discussion. This is therapy and a treatment. It is confronting but definitely necessary.

I didn't have the option to not take my meds. But I'm happy there are people who have that option.

My therapist is wild, I don't really implement a good percentage of his suggestions/observations, but the stuff I have resonated with has been life changing.

i would never ever accept 100% of what anyone says therapist or not

see for me it's the opposite, idk why my luck sucks in this department but MAN none of my therapists except for one really challenged me… I KNOW I need the challenge and I want it! but my last two therapists in particular literally just "yes Joe :)" and quiet and never asked questions they should've asked. like I want the prying! there's some deep sh*t in the Joe psyche and in my history, like so many sources of perpetual guilt and mommy issues and sh*t and I really need a therapist that'll poke the bear lol
