I feel like that's what Pink and Lady Gaga kinda did ? No shade to them, if it works then it's great for them tbh.

 

Pink had that rebel image, she was loud, all over the place and now she's singing some very generic pop songs made for soccer moms and eventhough she doesn't feel that popular it's working fine for her.

 

Gaga drastically softened her image post Artpop because of all the criticism she was receiving and started doing these boring songs and balads, and her duet album for asib really changed the gp's perception of her. Now that it worked it seems like she is allowing herself to be herself more though with mayhem and releases like disease, abra.
