I used to think Tove Lo made fat music before streaming her and giving her a chance - something like Tones and I or Meghan - turned out she makes the skinniest music ever.

 

Have you guys had similar experience with artists?

Anna Von Hausswolff, for sure.

I thought she was just another nepo baby, with the right contacts, but she's actually a ******* brilliant artist. 

 

And the opposite with St. Vincent. I thought she was an interesting artist until I actually listened to her music 

Addison Rae really kinda annoyed me with being a TikToker, constantly calling the paparazzi on herself, and trying to just copy 2000s aesthetics but the album turned out to be pretty decent and she has lots of potential. 

in 2019 i thought billie was some short-lived asmr girl sweeping grammys bc she like death & playing w sticks. 

 

then HTE dropped, and thats when i became a stan. shes very talented and different from the usual vocals/big production style. her storytelling got me. so i revisited her catalog, humbled myself, and came to terms that she is a legend and here to stay.

Fat Music?

I truly thought Azealia Banks would get her act together before leaving XL (2008-2010)..... And then Interscope / Polydor (2011-2013).... And then Prospect Park / Caroline (2014-2015).... And then on her own with Chaos & Glory Recordings.... And then eOne (2018-2019).... And then on her own with Chaos & Glory Recordings again.... And then Parlophone / Warner Music (2022-2023).   To fool me seven times, the music in-between must be stellar. And was. 

 

Unless she can release a project on the same level as Broke With Expensive Taste... that ship has finally sailed.

She is the biggest what-if in modern music alongside Sky Ferreira: came up when Nicki was still finding her footing, the real EDM crowd / NY Socialites / fashion circles loved her, and she had a fan in Jimmy Iovine, now-Recording Academy President Harvey Mason Jr, Lone, Machinedrum, Pearson Sound, M.J. Cole, Kanye West, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Pharrell, Dr. Luke, Diplo, and Rihanna.

 

Doja Cat, Bree Runway, and Doechii grew up listening to her early music.

Her streams and history clearly indicate that record labels still see potential. If only she saw that in herself.

 

 

I'd say Car Seat Headrest. Their name used to be everywhere around me, worshiped by indie hipsters, and since I had this personal rule of avoiding any music that felt like it was being shoved down my throat, I purposely stayed away for the longest time. Then, for some reason, I gave in and tried the album Twin Fantasy and was so floored and obsessed I put "My soul yearns for a fugitive from the law of nature" as my Tinder bio at the time. Truly one of the best songwriters of the modern generation. I was like damn, the hype is true.

thought audrey hobert would be disgrace abrams 2.0 but she actually makes good music

The fact that you missed out on 10 years of amazing music because you judged a skinny icon like that. A shame. 

 

For me it was probably Britney. Even though her most iconic hits are from her older albums I was just too young to really know her music like that but I've gone back to listen to her discography and its actually really good (even though it's a little dated). I see why she's an icon now.

Dw you were me in 2018 when she went viral for having spiders come out of her mouth and the only people I knew that listened to her were those weird bruh girls so I also thought she was a weirdo freak

 

Then the album dropped, everyone was listening, I ignored it for months, but then eventually gave in and listened to i love you first. The rest was history

Chappel Roan until I saw her live. Before I was like.... meh.

I did not give Björk a chance because I thought her music was artsy, fartsy poo and she was some weird girl who wore a swan dress to an award show and beat the hell out of some reporter (she was valid for this, btw).

Then I heard Homogenic and Vespertine and realized how wrong I was. Never went back.

Honestly, it's Gaga for me.

Not a fan of her work from The Fame to ARTPOP, I thought she was just your typical popstar , all style no substance, and relies on hype value.

But my perception of her changed when she released Cheek to Cheek and A Star is Born, and I get to appreciate her as an artist more

just because I was obsessed with her boyfriend for a bit but eventually I gave in and listen to her and some of her songs are catchy.  nearly saw her live but decided to skip it

 

I didn't used to care for Ariana at first, but gave her a proper listen during the Positions era and fell in love with her. I think she is genuinely tallented and has been growing and growing her artistic muscle in beautiful ways...

 

On the opposite end, I thought Gaga was like the future of pop and really interesting up until ArtPop when it became too obvious she was a good singer and marketeer but as an artist I think she is just totally overrated and a pos. 

 

In another completely different way, I never cared for Taylor, and then fell in love with Folklore and Evermore, which were great albums, but when went back to totally disregard her as a musician since those albums came out. She's a total fake, imo...

Little Mix. I like them as a trio now

Sabrina Carpenter. I thought she would be a one-hit wonder with Espresso. Turns out she had many other great songs. Her image is controversial, but not more than that of other pop stars.

Kesha. When I was a teenager I called her a "talentless shrew." I still feel guilty about saying that to this day. I didn't think she could actually sing and that's why she just talked in most of her songs instead. I was also into conspiracies at the time. The people on the websites I visited thought she was a "drug addicted Illuminati skank" and acted like anything that wasn't "boring, straight white man with a guitar" wasn't real music and was of the devil. So I sort of played along and pretended like I hated her too. 

 

But I was wrong about her. Her songs are catchy, good, she does have many where she does give us vocals, and she is just a fun, eccentric character. I think very highly of her now. 

Madison Beer.

 

I honestly knew her from edits of her being pretty and assumed she was just an influencer trying to get into music.

 

But finding out she was actually a strong vocalist changed my perception of her. Make You Mine was really a good direction for her too.

SZA. For some reason I didn't vibe with CTRL but I think SOS is a masterpiece.

Madison Beer. Her early relationship with Bieber and looking way too good made me doubt her but then Make You Mine was released and wheeeeeeeew first pop girl in years to catch my attention.

I didn't think Sia would be capable of becoming as trash as she did.

Definitely Charli XCX. I remember not thinking she was anything special, until I heard "Boom Clap" enough times for me to eventually like it. I remember going back and listening to her music and being blown away by how great it was. She was a lot better than I thought. It's funny how her best stuff is the stuff that she didn't make it big with.
