How did therapy help you?

Featured Replies

I just planned my first ever session with a therapist to finally work on my issues surrounding trust and relationships.

How are/were your experiences with a therapist? Did it help you? Is or was it something 'temporary' for you? Did you heal from the sessions?

have you ever tried getting closer to God ?

i know a lot of ppl don't believe in god... but many ppl get close to god and they're able to improve their lives for the better

therapy can be helpful, however... i hope everythin goes well for u

Just nasty for no reason :biblio: I hope your boyfriend cheats on you

Cognitive behavioral therapy is like "the norm" because it fits with the medical system, and it "quantifies" human experiences, it follows very strict protocols based on evidence… yet what really helped me was a Gestalt therapist.

How? I was able to recognize my own introjections, my therapist made me feel like a human instead of this flawed, pathological machine that needs to change & needs to fit in with the rest by being "okay" and "normal". My sadness was justified, my anger was justified. It blew my mind because no other therapist taught me to embrace my emotions, even the chaotic ones, instead of focusing exclusively on changing them, as if they were a flaw.

I had lots of cathartic moments, I enjoyed channeling emotions through my own abilities & interests (music, poetry, art) & straight up screaming.

Another really strong part of it was the influence from Tibetan meditation, oriental philosophy, existentialism… just so many tools that are just starting to be used by the "hardcore science" purists & proven to be effective.

I also saw a more traditional psychoanalyst once, it was interesting, but I didn't heal until I met my Gestalt therapist. And that's the thing, therapy healed me.

But anyway, I'm laughing at the ******* who downvoted you for talking about mental health & your beliefs. Imagine living like that, yikes 😬

the skream i let out

I let the voices in my head give each other therapy. It's free and keeps them occupied for long enough to not scare the men away until after I've had a little fun :coffee2:

I would advise you to prepare some jokes to lighten up the mood between the lashings you're about to get from your therapist

:suburban:

Therapy is great, but the actual sessions make up only around 5% of the process. You have to understand that the remaining 95% depends on the work you put in to make it truly effective

I downvoted because OP is a notorious troll and this is the latest in a long history of chronic attention seeking behaviour. Imagine calling someone a ******* over a downvote, yikes.

And aren't notorious trolls allowed to talk about mental health or express their beliefs?

You're so bothered lmao, and for nothing.

As someone who suffers from chronic depression I can say that speaking to a therapist once in a while has helped me even if it's just to vent a little. I wish you luck on your journey friend.

You guys are mean.

Therapy helped me alot. I've been in therapy for years and I enjoyed. I really liked my therapist, she was close to my age and it helped to be understood. The healing process happens in time. You do the work during the sessions and outside. Congrats for taking the first step. Best of the luck with the process

I learned that I had horrid posture and learned for to breathe with my diaphragm, fix my rib flare, and it completely changed my body and facial chemistry. I look like an athlete now.

The first thing I worked on was my psychosis. It was a lot. I thought I was being recruited for a drug mafia and that they were trying to kill me. At the same time, I had to deal with drama going on in college that really upset me.
The therapist told me I had to write something that wasn't sexual and that upset me so I stopped therapy.

My next therapist had to deal with my parasocial relationship with Selena and my belief that I was involved in the SG3 album that never ended up coming out.

My therapist after that had to deal with my non-existent relationship with the man I was writing most of my songs about, and my continued belief that I was working with Selena.

I stopped going to him after he told me, I only get into relationships if I want something, and he also told me Selena was not going to release more music.

My next therapist had a lot to do with my relationship with substances and also progressing with my music and coming to terms with the fact that I can say "i love meth" and that is an ok thing to say.

The therapist I have now is dealing with fine-tuning my current sobriety, going back into my life and figuring out how I was feeling when certain things happened to me, and focusing on what I can do to avoid being triggered and having mental breakdowns. And also my relationship with my family.

These are the gist of things i think.

The pendulum has swung back to looking down on therapy again after the oversaturation of therapy speak, but it's genuinely an amazing, tried and true practice. Any grievance feels lighter after expressing it out loud– no matter how heavy it feels in your head. I worked through a lot of trauma with therapy, I'm truly grateful for it. Therapist helps you fix yourself, they don't fix you, you do the work so don't think you're taking a shortcut by getting help.

I don't like it personally but I also think if you do it therapy shouldn't be something you do for life either (I feel the same about prescription drugs). Eventually you have to figure out and solve your own issues because a third party cannot do it for you. There's exceptions of course but for the vast majority of people, it really just takes self-discipline. Way too many people use therapy as a crutch and continue being destructive but because they vent once a week they think they're doing the work when that's literally the easiest part about dealing with mental health.

I feel like both the anti-therapy people who blame all their problems on society and the chronic-therapy talk people who make their issues their personality have all become insufferable to me.

It never did, it's nice to have someone to talk to for 1 hour once a month but it never works when your completely alone and you don't exist to anybody
