I really don't understand her career. She could've been booked for festival dates last year at the very least after her album came out. Opening for someone on tour. A 'for the fans' headlining mini club tour. She has a coolness to her which is a huge asset, there's a reason James Blake was on her album, she got a good P4k review.

Absolutely. Either her team sucks, she is sabotaging herself, or she's tied up in some sort of restricting legal agreement. Otherwise it really makes no sense.

I agree that her career has been confusing, to say the least. It's a super complex, layered situation by all accounts.

 

* She absolutely fumbled her initial buzz. There is no excuse (under the sun) for her not have had a cute lil intro album of Urban-Pop bops out right after Motivation. The whole perfectionist spiel is a bunch of nonsense. She shoulda got that first album out and built from there. Too much overthinking, overcooking, and overdoing.

 

* Same with Wild Side. Not having an album campaign ready to go was a big fumble. Be that on her part or the label's.

 

* At the same time, we came to learn that BOTH of her parents were battling cancer. It's no joke. 

 

* Changed management. Smart move, as previous manager (Brandon) either clearly had no clue or was not positioned to help her out of whatever rut the label and their (his and hers) misteps caused. It takes time for a new regime to optimize, so grace should have been given. 

 

* Above all, it's crystal clear there is something big and bad at play with her and RCA. It doesn't profit her to say what that is while signed to them. But I really need the critics to put their thinking caps on. Y'all are almost giving her too much credit to really believe she has that much autonomy over her career. Sure, she could and should be using things like social media better to help her cause, but it's crystal clear RCA DGAF and probably never did. If she were ever any kind of priority, they would have essentially forced her hand to release whatever music they wanted her to, and she would have had to contractually. The "lazy" jabs irk me to no end because it's wild to think SHE would want to actively sit on the bench. No artist does. 

 

She's effectively between a rock and a hard place. Speak on the drama and risk getting industry blacklisted. Stay silent and huge groups of people think you're "lazy" when in actuality she's probably going through hell with RCA.

 

* She's not totally innocent and could and should be doing what she can to empower herself. Label issues don't prevent her from turning it as a fashionista. She should be at the opening of a door, getting her name and profile out there. If influencers are getting into the MET, so should she. Same with the performing. She is still in opening act territory, so shoulda been on somebody's tour last year and this. 

 

If chart success isn't on the cards for her, she really should be modelling her career and celebrity on the Teyana Taylor blueprint. She's so omnipresent. Not wildly successful in any one thing. But she's around, present, cool, culurally recognized, and is booked and busy as a result.
