Lorde - 'Virgin'

I'm not sure I'd say that the fandom "hated it", but Melodrama came out at a time when most pop artists were chasing more of a Hip-hop or R&B influenced sound (this was mid 2010s when Ariana was black), a sound much closer to Pure Heroine than Melodrama, and the pre-release singles were hated by many, although quite a lot of people came around when the album was released. The good reviews helped.

Now everyone seems to claim that it was universally loved at the time of release, but these are the 6 albums that Grammy pop voters preferred in the 2017/2018 season.

But people will still claim she needs to make another Melodrama.

I appreciate the historical reference, but let's be clear that neither Joanne nor Lust for Life were universally acclaimed (by fans, or critics), either upon release, or now :dies:

I agree that I remember people being disillusioned with "Green Light" and "Liability"... though Melodrama did feel more eventful upon release. But that was following the it girl phenomenon of Pure Heroine, so I don't think we should ever expect that level of commotion from her again :coffee2:

EDIT: I've also never heard those Ed Sheeran or Imagine Dragons albums, and I hope to keep it that way :gaycatina1: the grammys represent who is being commercially pushed in the music industry, more than anything :giraffe:

  • new track in 3 days.

  • I believe Melodrama remains her magnum opus, but Virgin sounds absolutely incredible. It's the Lorde we know, yet it also feels incredibly refreshing. In Hammer, she mentioned, "I might be born again,

i'd be throwing ass to this and suddenly a line or a melodic choice would break my heart, oh lord(e) you musical genius

The melodies are all stuck in my head. This is pop perfection. There's no wrong melody here

Melodrama was nominated for AOTY that year so it's not like these albums were considered better, probably more pop-ish

The opening of MOTY sounding epic now. Oh LORDE

Shapeshifter is probably my favourite on the album - the "tonight I just wanna fall" refrain with the synths coming in always makes me emotional

Right?! Wtf

I was a Current Affairs supremacist but I think I'm shapeshifting into a Little Shapeshifter
