The album cover is growing on me but not THAT much tho

High Road is a really fascinating project to me overall because it reveals itself to be very sad over time. I understand why people were disappointed with it overall, but barring the first two tracks and BFF it's incredibly strong. like others have said, it represents a sort of attempt to reach an irreverent pop ideal she achieved on her first three projects, but it doesn't approach it in a way where it can feel fully realized when taking her situation at the time into hand. instead, there's a poetic beauty in that what she achieves is instead sad, chaotic, authentically her, and escapist in a way where it's never been more clear that an artist is desiring escapism. it's escapist for the sole reason of needing to get out of the mindset of being depressed about a situation that'd been going on for too long. that's why I love Potato Song so much because it's so clear that she took the vibes of one other song she'd released post-Rainbow (RWSM) and used it to—get ready cause I'm about to sound like someone who goes to kava bars all the time and listens to a lot of EDM and calls themself a hippie and says "inner child" a lot—address her inner child specifically. it's like telling herself it's 100% okay to seek out escapism if it helps her get through the sh*tty low times. it's such a great song and not to sound pretentious but I think the people who get it the most tend to be dedicated longtime fans of hers

 

either way, High Road = consistently underappreciated

It's very interesting that the project was promoted as being her return to her former "pop Ke$ha" vibes but that ultimately when the album actually released it was it's ballads which seem to be universally the most acclaimed. I think like you said there is a quiet sadness to it because she was certainly trying to emulate her past self, but it couldn't be fully realised because of the major distress she was so obviously under. I think Gag Order was truly a turning point, now that was her being allowed to be authentic and raw unlike she ever had before and I think releasing that must have been incredibly cathartic. That, and obviously the end of the legal battle, have lead us to this era which, even if not every single has landed for everybody, feels like a genuine return to her carefree nature which is the most beautiful thing to see.

exactly! I feel like we're finally getting another era of the party girl stuff that's authentically her but High Road and Gag Order were very necessary steps in her artistic trajectory 

yall are wack for disliking the pink period on the cover, cause it's the only iconic element, and it's a unique yet straightforward rendition of the title

like the pic of lips underneath would be the most generic thing ever, without the period over it

High Road is def her worst album, I love the songs I like (maybe 5 tracks) but the rest is stuff I'd never listen to again if she wasn't the singer 

 

I was also depressed when it dropped and I think that made me dislike the album as well lol

I think that was the original concept (although can't confirm). I think she probably thought it was too safe/on the noise, hence landing on 'period', which I much prefer.

that and i think since JOYRIDE was a last second write/record and immediate release, i think that song may have changed the trajectory even just slightly

Father daughter dance is one of her best songs to date, high road has insane highs but low lows

the joyride to delusional track run eatssss. wasn't the biggest fan of yippee or delusional, but they really have grown on me while listening to them in the sequence of the album. i also realllly prefer the yippee solo version and hope that's the one being pushed! 

 

she's coming for a cohesive, concise pop smash of a record and this is everything i've wanted from her! gag order is my favorite album of hers and it also takes a cohesive, measured approach, so i'm excited to experience this record.
