In this entire forum, there's always this discourse about talent and how it always wins.

Then why are girls like Tinashe not winning for instance?

 

There are thousand of girls in the world that can sing, dance, write, etc. But not all of them get to super stardom.

So what really makes a star in the end?

 

 

 

Tons of talented people are not stars, but a lot of stars that stick around and can successfully reinvent have talent. 

You need a baseline of talent to be a star, but after that it all comes down to luck and having the right team behind you. 
 

Your local church probably has people who can outsing (or even outdance) some MPGs, but do they have the right people behind them to market them? Do they know how to make an actual hit? 
 

The Voice and American Idol spotlight a lot of artists with great voices, but very few end up working with the right producers and songwriters who know how to channel their talents into hits.

I disagree with the fact that it's based on "luck" though.  

 

I feel like most of our pop girls just had the it factor to captivate the masses, that takes some kind of talent. 

For instance, you could take the best industry songwriters, dancers, singer behind the scenes, etc. and they still couldn't pull a Madonna, Britney, Rihanna. etc.

Getting access to the handful of executives that can change your life and make you a mainstream celebrity is definitely partially luck. 
 

Out of the billions of people on the planet, the handful of MPGs we have aren't necessarily the top 10 talents in the world.

Being a star is much more complex than we realize, that's my whole thought process here.

Anybody can blow up, you need talent to keep people interested in what you do next after the schtick wears off. That's why girls like Beyonce or Madonna have sounded like 20 different artists at this point and smashed every time. People who lack talent don't last.

Which was why I said part of the equation is getting access to the people who can market you appropriately or pick the right hits for you.

 

I saw more of Tinashe's skincare commercial as a kid than any of her actual music. 

 

Any label or team =/= the right label or team

No, being beautiful won't make you automatically win a beauty pageant either.

 

Talent is just one part.  Determination (drive), luck and network are more important.

 

There's something called Star Power. You can be the most talented person in the world, if you lack Star Power, you'll be just another khia. Star Power is more important than talent imo.

Star power is just something that you can't fake... the way you present yourself and act in front of a camera, is more decisive than talent.

As much as I hate this... This is true.

 

I could list tons of very talented artists who are not even close to being stars, or even commercially successful, while there are a lot of untalented people out there who are rich and famous because they put in the work. Of course, being talented will help you a lot in getting to the top but that's not a requisite for being a star.
