GD's voice can be an acquired taste but he's one of the best songwriters in the world.

It's kinda like an IU you-had-to-be-there thing.  He started in entertainment at such an early age with that precocious force Koreans dig, and managed to maintain that into adulthood, and now the kids of his original fans are now his fans, too.  He's not edgy.  He's talented.  I mean, the music can't be bad.  He's so talented!

no but illusion was legit a (promo) single. it was even featured and promoted on apple music's up next program on top of it being played on radios in korea and being promoted on domestic platforms. the only reason for the lack of direct promo and no music video was because SM was a ******* mess back then and could only do half of the job  didn't aespa even say they didn't have their own team until welcome to my world? the entire Girls rollout was botched

ATRL user @Windy Day knows more about aespa's promotions than the people who handle aespa's promotions, who didn't exist until 2023. To think I thought 1 = 3 was an all-time low just hours earlier.

tbh i wish more groups did multiple singles for their albums. i just read that min heejin said she put 3 singles out of a 4-tracks EP because "it's such a pity how it's the lead singles that get all the attention" and i think she's right

 

i also like how aespa created multiple contents for the b-sides during welcome to my world and armageddon

Supernova and WTMW were fully serviced singles, Illusion was a promotional single. You literally said with your full chest that they didn't have a management team until 2023. This is why I only take like 3 users in this thread seriously

no. promotional singles aren't singles. By this exact logic Dope and A-yo are singles too.

but the point is illusion was still pushed more or less heavily in korea with radio support, playlisting on domestic AND international platforms, huge banners on melon, promotional messages directly sent to melon users  and later on TV promotions and i'm probably forgetting a lot too since it was years ago.

 

as an aespa stan, we need to stop rewriting history  i know it's less obvious if you don't experience it first hand but the song was promoted in korea no matter what bullshit the PR team said. it was definitely not treated like a random b-side.

first illusion was "genuinely a b-side that didn't receive any major push" but now it's a promotional single that received a somewhat major push but still isn't a single because the PR team said it wasnt 

 

however, ditto (which isn't even listed as a single / title track on platforms btw) should be considered as a proper single because it got the exact same promo as illusion + a music video 

 

i consider both songs as prerelease singles btw so...

at the end of the day it's just a play on words and whatever bullshit the press release said at the time 

 

both songs got a huge push with marketing campaigns and hyped their lead single / EP that came out later. the only difference is that ditto got a music video and went on to become one of the biggest songs of the past few years

to be completely fair, illusion came out before newjeans changed the industry and the kpop rollouts. you know it would be called a proper single if it came out a few months later

Illusion was out for months before receiving ANY promotion. Whichever company does their english PR made it very clear that the song was dropped to commemorate(read: get buzz for) their Warner deal, and was not a single.

 

 

Changing labels would not have made it more of a single, changing strategies and swapping it with Girls would have.

This is the whole issue with title track bs, it creates a faux grey area. There are singles which aren't the title track, there are also songs used for promoting the album itself and aren't intended to stand on their own as a commercial product, hence "promo single". These are two different things.

 

SM and Warner saying Illusion isn't a single is also SM and Warner saying they weren't going to throw their whole weight behind it. HYBE calling Ditto a single means that they did. The only reason ppl argue singles vs b-sides is specifically because of this distinction, it's about intent. The company knows what the company wants a song to be better than fans.

 

Mys have been getting dragged for calling Illusion a b-side for 3 years at this point but the fact of the matter is it outperformed the "title track" so even by the stupid konglish names it's still a noteworthy success.
