Idk, I think people are addicted to it in a way.

because it's fun and the taste is actually a part of the experience. spicy food can also burn your mouth and people love it

 

and i say this as a teetotaler 

 

 

You only smell after drinking alcohol if you get completely pissed. You won't stink after having a glass of wine or a cocktail.

 

Taste is also subjective, I don't like the taste of beer but other kinds of alcohol taste nice to me.

To get drunk? Seems obvious. It's like asking why people smoke weed. 
 

Also if you're getting a cocktail such as Margarita, Cosmo, or Long Island Tea it's not supposed to taste bad. 

I like the taste of alcohol but not all. On election night I bought spiked refreshers to bring to my friends house because they wanted alcohol to help through the night but also don't like the taste of it. They didn't drink any so I took it home and poured it in my coffee lol.

 

Anyway I like the feeling of being a little buzzed / a little drunk. I've haven't gotten super drunk since I was like 20 and certainly not drunk enough to smell like alcohol.

I hate the taste and I hate the feeling of it. It's so unhealthy and so many people have drinking problems and don't realize it. It's so normalized. I only have the occasional drink out to dinner.

Alcohol won't make you stink unless you have some sort of liver condition

With that said, yeah, at a certain age it's just not fun anymore. I get sleepy and I get too aware of my heartbeat

Ok but there's a difference between food/drink making your breath smell and your whole body stinking like an alcoholic, which is what I thought the OP was referring to

There are other ways to do it, but alcohol is very attached to the culture so people do it by default and to fit in. 

 

The real question is: Why do people smoke? It smells awful and it's horrible when people smoke in your face. So ruuuude
