Two Disney acts ruling the industry. Surprised?

Featured Replies

For years (decades), Disney artists have always had to fight against the stigma of being a Disney artist. The industry has always had a hard time taking them seriously (they lacked recognition from awards, and critics have always been a bit harsh on them too). Their success has never been on par with non-Disney acts, especially at the beginning of their careers although it was more their label's fault. Still, when they changed levels, even if they all managed to have big success, they fell short compared to other MPG and their biggest eras.

Now, times have changed and we have not one but TWO Disney acts as two of the biggest female artists right now:

Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter.

I don't know about you, but as a former Disney act stan, I find this surprising and makes me happy that they have been able to break the Disney stigma that has always haunted my fave's generation for over a decade.

Do you think the Miley/Selena/Demi/Jonas Brother generation helped them? They were the first and last BIG Disney gen to make it in music. Those who came before them, with the exception of maybe Hilary Duff, barely lasted in the industry. They never gave up and have always been constant, achieving new peaks and recognition eventually in their careers.

Hilary Duff paved the way for these girls

She barely paved the way for herself. Britney, Christina and Hilary carried the heavy weight musically and then Miley, Demi and Selena followed that lead.

Nope cause disney is the best kids channel + they pump out some of the best pop girls in the industry

Britney, Christina and Hilary paved the way for Ashley who paved the way for Sabrina Carpenter.

What's surprising about it?

As if ex-acts like Ariana, Selena and Miley weren't ruling 2010s lol:gaycat6:

Was Ashley's music career eventful enough compared to the other Disney girlies? I thought her and Vanessa fell a bit in between the others. Just like Raven and Aly & AJ. I thought they were all sort of underrated. The nostalgia omg.

I'm not surprised.

1. At the end of the day, it's a job. Disney is great work experience for a career as a popstar.

2. Getting cast on Disney is already a massive achievement based on skill and talent. If they're some of the most talented kids, they're going to grow up to be some of the most talented young adults. It's the same with gymnastics and swimming.

3. And most importantly, they come with a built-in audience/fanbase. Those fans grow up with them, and then they become the generation deciding what's cool. When 'Driver's License' debuted at #1, I saw all the tweets/news articles about what a huge achievement it was for a debut single. I was like "huh? Who is this girl?" The same teenagers who grew up watching her and sent that song to #1, are now at college getting drunk.

So, not surprising at all. They actually seem like the logical choices for labels to back (financially) — and they are.

The last time Olivia rulled something was in the COVID 2021 era. We are in 2024, keep up.

Ariana is not part of Disney. I'm talking about Disney artists specifically. Selena has never come close to the level of success Olivia or Sabrina are experimenting. Miley is perhaps the only one who came close with Bangerz but to be honest, SOUR is still bigger and SNS is shaping up to be bigger than Bangerz as well.

And as I mention, Sabrina and Olivia are not only having success on charts but also in acclaim, awards, etc. Selena and Miley never had this support either despite having big success as well.

And since then she's been able to debut with over 300k album units, outdoing her massive debut album. She's one of the biggest female artists right now whether you like it or not.

Are you afraid of Demi for some reason? :fan:

Times have changed, and it's much harder for artists to break through like they used to. Having a Disney background now gives artists a boost they really need.

Also, we needed fresh talent in the music scene— the others just weren't cutting it.

Oh, and one more thing: Sabrina and Olivia have way better music at the start of their careers than Selena, the Jonas Brothers, and Demi did at theirs.

tbf people outside of stan bubbles don't associate Olivia and Sabrina with Disney the way they did with Miley, Selena etc back then. They all knew who Hannah Montana was, but today there're so many shows and platforms that many don't even know these girls come from Disney.

that's a good point!

I remember when Olivia blew up overnight. Very few people knew she was a Disney act - I had no idea. Unlike Miley, Demi or Selena, people found out that Olivia was a Disney girl after storming the music industry, not the other way around.

Same for Sabrina, I guess. Her Disney fanbase is perhaps bigger than Olivia but it's been a while since the last time she worked with Disney so most people are discovering her now.

She's on track to be the ex-act with the highest grossing tour :deadbanana4:

It's not the same way for all. Olivia's debut album was already with a big label, Interscope, and she was barely known as a Disney kid unlike Selena or Miley or even Sabrina who all have a longer path with Disney.

No?

Being on Disney guarantees a teen audience, massive cash back up and payola to kick start a music career

Not being on Disney is actually more impressive

Yes. They're the next generation of household names/mainstream female pop stars after the triad of Demi / Miley / Selena.

And what's crazy, is they're reaching even bigger highs than the prior 3 (except for Miley who most recently got her flowers) . And the old generation of Disney stars stood on top of Hilary Duff's shoulders, who unfortunately had VERY FEW accolades/numbers to back up the fact she was massive
