Is "MPG" as a concept defunct?

Featured Replies

I just feel like the term only applied to the pop girls of the past and nowadays none of the girls exude what an MPG is supposed to anymore, no matter how many hits they get.

What do you guys think? and if it's not, who is considered a modern MPG?

there is no such as an MPG y'all just came up with the term and ran it into the ground

Yeah, by the classic definition of MPG the concept is pretty outdated

Spoiler

and there's really only one MPG left under the old definitions, so I don't think it's relevant

2000s was Brit, Xtina, Shakira, JLo, Bey, Avril

2010s Katy, Gaga, Rih, Adele, Taylor, Ariana

2020s seems to be Doja, Billie, Dua, Olivia

MPG is an amorphous concept defined by 00s/10s internet gays. It never meant anything and would include people who were neither topping charts or mainly making pop music but would also be used to gaslight fans of artists who were both of those things.

It's not a surprise that future generations haven't adopted this gatekeepy nomenclature. Current acts are just as iconic and culturally relevant.

yes its over. sza, doja, olivia, dua sorta fit the mold but the true mpgs status has fallen apart :(

It's still a relevant concept, it just doesn't carry the same weight that it used to.

First of all, I agree with the points already made in here that its an arbitrary term made up by stan war'd fomos with no fixed definition, and that we can use it to simply refer to the current crop of women dominating the pop game

But I do also think it was a more accurate descriptor for the 2008-2013 era of female pop domination, mainly because "pure" pop/EDM was a unifying genre that all of the girls back then (Gaga, Rihanna, Katy, Britney, Nicki etc) were all smashing and saturating the pop landscape with in a way we don't see today. There was also a more singular image the girls were trying to fit into back then. The girls on top today, ranging from Taylor to SZA to Lana to Doja(?) to Billie to Olivia to Dua, have more variance in terms of genre AND image that kinda makes it harder to group them together the way we used to

It never existed but at least it wasn’t as dumb as that “Trinity” concept from like 2012TRL lmao

Which was the most random thing like :skull: Britney, Bey and Gaga being the trinity in 2012?

True MAIN pop girls meant the reigning supremes, that era is done because no girls do full on eras anymore and get back to back sucess.

You need at LEAST (3) consecutive successful eras to be a MPG unless you come out swinging like Adele with 21.

Always so dumb because Rih was NEVER included despite sis having several smash hits EVERY year for over half a decade straight :skull:

You're only as mpg-y as your last single nowadays. The last true traditional mpg is Ariana Grande. Anyone who came after (mainly Dua, Olivia, Billie) hasn't released as many albums to know for sure if they've truly cemented themselves or if they just got lucky for an era or two.

Because it’s Bey, Rihanna & Gaga. All 3 destroyed Britney in the 10s.

I know, I was full on Navy at that time and sis was mercilessly stomping on all three during that time :deadbanana4:

MPG was a term that gays used to compare the 2000s/2010s girls without having to put them against the 80s/90s giants. It's pretty outdated nowadays

Pretty much this, what I came to say. Now all the new girls are getting grouped together without having to be put against people like Beyonce, Taylor, Adele, etc.

yes for many of the points made so far but also cause the industry has changed so much since the prime days of its use (aka pre 2017).

I honestly think it doesn’t really matter how your singles do. Your singles can go number 1 but if your albums debut with 90k or less, you still can’t be considered a MPG. However, if your album debuts with 300k, you can be a MPG even if you lead only goes to top 20.

Keep in mind Britney didn’t have her second #1 single until Womanizer, and she would definitely quality as a MPG.

Well her album sales and tour receipts were kinda tragic for that time, unlike Gaga and Bey. She was basically a singles artist like Doja Cat back then

Her albums consistently did 3m+ YEARLY with smash singles and her bigger eras like Loud and GGGB pushing 6m and 9m respectively at that point. Diamonds World Tour did 140m too. She never had high debuts but her singles and albums always caught on well enough with the GP.

Like… sis was churning out hits and hits, had consistent album sales and a solid tour. It was just the fact she was more of a GP fave than a stan fave, especially on ATRL. That’s the same reason Taylor and Adele weren’t included (the real trinity was probably Rih/Tay/Adele at that point tbqh), the Monsters, Hive and Army just had the biggest stanbases on here so they got away with the lies of their “trinity” :michael:

She may have been a singles artist, but she was THEE SINGLES ARTISTE. She sold 166 million single and no one comes close :giraffe:
