Why is Rosalía called a coloniser?

Featured Replies

I recently got into Rosalía's music and I've seen a lot of discussion about her being a coloniser and I'm a bit confused. I kinda understand that people don't like it when she's referred to as "Latin" but other than that the criticism seems odd to me.

I've seen people saying that she's a white European woman stealing from reggaeton artists in South America, but equally there are lots of South American artists who are white who are making this kind of music without the same criticism (Bad Bunny, Karol G, J Balvin, Shakira etc).

At the end of the day Spain speaks the same language as most of South America so it's not surprising they enjoy similar genres of music. Obviously there's a historical angle to South American-Spanish relations but should Rosalía be centred in those conversations? Discuss.

It’s stupid criticism because her first two albums are full of flamenco music that originated in Spain and is integrated into Spanish culture :deadbanana2:

It's complete bullshit

listen, i’m not saying i agree with anyone in this complex matter of cultural appropriation/insensitivity, bc i’m not south american, but what you need to take away from the discourse is that she’s spanish. south american people aren’t very fond of spanish people capitalizing on their culture because spain colonized them, which of course is a very sensitive subject. simply put it’s not about her being white, it’s about her being a spanish person who makes music that was originated in areas that spain colonized in the past. the people you gave as examples are not spanish.

but as i said i don’t have any opinion on this, so before someone quotes me and calls me a snowflake or whatever i’m just trying to present what i’ve understood about the matter and what i’ve seen south americans say online.

Gurl... is not about being white... Latinos come from all shades and ethnicities... is about THE LATIN CULTURE.

They're right. I don't seen any connection between countries singing in spanish and a country called Spain.

they couldn't drag her flawless discography, aesthetics, videos and performances so they gotta find another way to drag ha I guess

In the English speaking western world it has become frowned upon to wear clothing or use elements (musical or otherwise) from cultures/countries/ethnicities that you are not a part of since birth. However, Latin Americans by and large do not give a **** about this. You will very rarely find any people living in Latin America saying that about Rosalia

Because Europeans are colonizers. The skin color doesn't matter at all.

Any white European will be called a colonizer on the internet

And what's wrong with that? :coffee2:

you did not compare a white spaniard to white latinos :gaycat6: as someone else said, it's about the culture not the skin color....

Well her flamingo music was way better than the trash music she makes nowadays.

And how does that contradict the fact that the colonizers were the Spanish people that went there and not the Spanish people that stayed in Europe.

Latin American "culture" is not a monolith btw. All we share is language and religion. Our customs & traditions are different in the same way Wallonian culture is not identical to the French one.

Many Latin Americans do not have native american origin at all, they come from the Europeans that migrated to latin america. Not even taking into account the families of the fascists from Germany and Italy that fled their countries and settled in countries like Brazil and Argentina.

And viceversa, we don't know if Rosalia's (or any other white Spaniard or European) ancestors were native american that migrated to Europe at some point.

This is why making the issue of colonization and cultural appropriation about someone in particular is dumb af. Most of us don't know the history of our family previous to the 20th century.

And yes, we can talk about the privileges of being born in an European country vs a Latin american one, but then we must also talk about the privileges of being a white latin american making reggaeton music, a genre originated from black people, as OP says.
