Are samples ruining pop music?

Featured Replies

The chorus is a blatant copy/paste of What Is Love. I’m sick of these songs that have zero originality. What happened to creativity?

I don’t mind samples if they’re incorporated into the beat or a small part of a melody. But when the hook is the entirely replicated you’re clearly just out of ideas.

Do you agree?

It just feels like a shameless cheap way to get a hit. What’s the point of making a new song if the selling point is the old one?

Sorta yes sorta no, we honestly get some great bops from it but it is becoming a bit repetitive at this point.

A sample like Alien Superstar is fine, but the I’m Blues of the world are starting to get very tired, as much as I like them.

Yeah, it's starting to become very annoying.

Or if you are going to do a sample, a lesser known one works too.

Yep. Blame rap for normalizing this.

Eh, I would argue that rap pulls it off better

Yeah. People are not even smart enough to come up with melodies anymore, dude. Do your ******* job and compose your own song.

Yeah there's no originality. People just copy and paste the sample throughout the whole song and sometimes the song sounds like a cover (I'm Blue).

Here's how you do a sample well:

like listen to this **** :rip: im so done

there's a difference between sampling and taking a song and basically just remixing it

*Interpolations, but yes. Nostalgia bait is completely out of control, and not just in music (see: the endless remakes, cameos and sequels we've been getting in cinema).

I love FN and AH, but, at this point, I think they're starting to suffer from Eminem syndrome a.k.a. terrible imitators who don't get the appeal of what they're imitating in the first place.

I wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing an anti-nostalgia wave of pop culture. We need the pop music equivalent of EEAAO. Something NEW.

There's definitely been too many blatant ones as of late.

Well, pop music is based around making generic digestible music, and since you can only do so much with three/four chords, we've gotten to the times when every pop melody has already been made in the last decades, so in order to protect new artists from old artists suing them, they just straight up sample them. Some artists do it better like Beyoncé, and then you have David Guetta who basically makes 'covers' of those songs because he doesn't add anything interesting :rip:

No, a few of them were cute but now its getting redundant.

my faves are excellent when it comes to samples so I'm good

The industry has been out of new ideas for years, with pop producers re-creating their past hits with slight tweaks. Now they're just being more upfront about it, and just doing direct covers of widely-known old songs with zero alterations :rip:

Wow, that song in the OP is pathetic :bibliahh:

Personally I'm torn, It's boring when they just steal the hooks and barely add anything else but some subtle samples with original choruses can be done very well and I appreciate those.

Ava has made sampling her entire sound, she’s a part of the problem :cm:

(I must admit she has bop after bop though)

Your fav is responsible for this mess in the first place. :rip:

samples nope bc they have always existed, literally COPY AND PASTE a past hit? yep

It's embarrassing, it's a scam, and it just shows the lack of originality of the artist and producers.
