If it’s anything like Smile, she can really keep it. I don’t expect anything innovate from her, but if you’re gonna give us generic pop music, make it good, and not junk like ‘Cry About It Later’

This isn't happening, nor should it.

 

She has more than enough for selling her catalog, and the climate's still brutal for pop outside TikTok trends and marquee names, which she can't depend on anymore (died for her a long time ago). Her label won't support anything that can't get pickup outside their marketing and Miley's stuff past Flowers is bombing so it's not an apt comparison (Miley's voice actually sounds great on other kinds of material both on record AND live and has been complimented on her covers).

 

Even when Katy's tried to branch out to "alternative pop" it's felt forced and cheesy and she doesn't seem willing to go back to her pre-OOTB era after she switched from Christian rock (before the metro-baiting Ur So Gay either).

 

At this point she needs to accept she's a relic from another era and move on to other venues like sponsorships or a clothing line.

 

If she is doing a tell-all, however, I'd still love answers on the legal battles with the nuns, the model she assaulted from the music video set, and her support for Caruso and Rogan.

It has to be. She's 38 now. She's still young but she really should mature her sound. I think she is capable. She doesn't have the best voice but she still sounds serviceable on ballads and midtempo pop songs. I actually think Katy has the perfect voice to pull off a pop-rock album but it has to be done right. No corny cliche lyrics, no colorful tacky outfits, no dad jokes, etc etc.

Exactly, something in the vein of OOTB but more mature would be amazing, still fun but not childish.

Dance-pop died. She couldn't sing like or do R&B crossover like Ariana, didn't cultivate a loyal-enough fanbase or have the songwriting ability of Taylor, didn't branch out to other genre respectable covers like Miley (partly because she simply doesn't have the ability), isn't willing nor has the range to branch into hyperpop or alternative pop nor has the festival audience or critical reception draw of artists like Charli XCX, Lorde, or Carly Rae Jepsen, and finally, she decided to still be the joke and not taken seriously on her residency, regardless of it doing solid numbers (at first). She's boxed herself in, and at this point I don't think it's worth it for her to try and get out of it.
