SOS still does not have any physicals out.

 

I came across this interesting tweet that made me ask the question - Is SOS bigger than Midnights considering we live in the Streaming era?

sos is def a moment and I honestly did not expect Sza to smash this hard but let's not compare her to the biggest and most successful artist in the world at the moment

No, maybe SOS will end up bigger in the US but worldwide it's not even close. 

Also this comparison doesn't make sense, SZA can't sell as much physicals as Taylor and many people listen to albums using physical copies which is a form of music consumption.

Nope. It's a massive flop and its #1 position for weeks is undeserved because it's streaming fueled while doing only 400 copies per week. For example, Midnights sold like 160 000 digital albums, Pink's new album sold 30 000 digital albums as well. No one cares to buy SZA's album so miss me with that excuse that she doesn't have physical albums out when Itunes is still somewhat relevant.

Yes. At least in the US. Not sure about the 1.6M week debut for midnights though. How long SOS is gonna make up for that? But either way, both talented ladies absolutely dominating the 2020s.

No. Most of SOS' sales come from the US. While Midnights is arguably Taylor's most global record yet

No. It's failed to outperform any of Midnights' weekly units despite its residency at #1. SOS is currently in its 10th week charting. For comparison...

 

10th week (US):

Midnights - 106K units

SOS - 87K units

No. SOS will never catch up to Midnights. Which is a shame, the album is amazing

SZA doesn't have physical albums, so almost all of her music is consumed through streaming. Taylor had both physical and streaming, so fans and the general public utilized both listening to CDs & vinyls, as well as streaming, meaning consumption is split. 

 

You can't compare streaming numbers side from side without accounting for the fact that millions of physical copies of "Midnights" were already sold. 

The tweet is misleading because it says "no physicals" but the numbers are the SEA units only and don't include digital sales. Midnights sold 161k digital copies the first week and without physicals, the numbers would've certainly been much bigger.

Why didn't she release physicals? Seems like a major missed opportunity considering how hot vinyls are at the moment.

Well, that is her label to blame I guess. I'm not sure they really planned this album release 

SOS has not pass yet midnights first week units…it still needs a couple of weeks more, and midnights has sold more in each first 11 weeks than SOS (this is its 12th week) so…no. When you start with “if” you already know the answer 

I'd say that globally, Midnights is bigger because Taylor Swift as an artist is bigger worldwide, has many years into the industry, fans everywhere and like 10 albums released, but SZA having this kind of success with just 2 albums is huge, she's huge already, the fact that SOS is giving TS competition says it all. Also, Kill Bill is without a doubt bigger than any of Midnights' singles.

Didn’t it take SOS like 11 weeks to match Midnights’ debut week? Not to mention, on a week vs. week basis SOS hasn’t been outperforming Midnights either. Midnights has moved almost 4M units and even with pre-release units (something only SOS has in this ‘battle’) it still has moved only half the units  

 

I’m way too lazy to post the week by week comparison of how they’ve performed since their first week but maybe someone else will. And this isn’t even bringing global success into the equation where Midnights is bigger by an even longer shot. I’m sure ATRL will say yes though since they’re allergic to objective facts when it comes to Taylor.

 

Side note: SOS is still huge and has been a runaway/unexpected smash, stop setting her up by comparing her to the fastest selling album of the decade…

Evidently. The tweet cited by OP is so dumb. They're acting like it's some kind of gag that Taylor has physicals out. 

Anything to undermine The Music Industry
