I think this forum needs to accept the fact that all the pop girls are capitalists first. Be serious. Any one of them would take the $24M without hesitation. Those who say otherwise are just in denial about who their faves really are. :deadbanana2:

This too. Can't we condemn racism and homophobia in America but also in the UAE? Like why does pointing out that queer people are jailed for being gay in Dubai somehow translate to not recognizing that Beyonce and every Black artist faces inexcusable racism?

I don't see how this changes the question: is it alright to perform at a government-sponsored event for a regime that oppresses gay people. And not in the sense of trying to curb marriage equality, but literally make it illegal to be with someone of the same sex.

Because it’s the equivalent to “why would she perform in such a racist country that systemically oppresses both black and gay people?” She’s done some very bold, polarizing things in the US that very few MPGs would dare even do. She was eaten alive for paying homage to the Black Panther at halftime by republicans and her Black Is King project was also subjected to the same kind of hate by the same group. It never stopped twinks on atrl from creating a narrative that it’s a “gimmick” or creating a circle jerk over the way the latter flopped compared to something like the ASIB soundtrack that ultimately benefited from a more conservative demographic. (No hate to Gaga, it’s just a prime example)

Blackpink performing there isn't even the same thing. Beyonce has a LGBTQ fan base. BLACKPINK are a group from a niche genre

kpop is niche? :rip: blackpink have millions of fans globally

Comparing America and Dubai is braindead. As bad as America could be is not Dubai

It’s worse in some ways. Lbr

the only one of them who cared about the LGBTQ community were Gaga and Madonna. Britney, Katy, Taylor, Beyonce, Rihanna use them for views and hits

I don’t think an artist who allegedly tried to highlight queer music with her recent album should be selling out to a bourgeois event in a notoriously homophobic country.

She is no different than those corporations that put up a rainbow flag in June and then turn around and support politicians against our rights.

Both performed in Dubai, I guess they only used them too.

she should be lashed for the radio silence, lack of fans content, and performing exclusively for rich people like her.

the ads for dubai hotels/tourism on this thread :ahh:

but 1. 24 million dollars 2. she has LGBTQ+ fans everywhere, not just outside of the UAE

Probably not but also most of our faves would do the same if offered the same amount of $$ so I’m gonna keep it cute.

This is not for dubai or was paid from dubai money, the hotel is a private property owned by a white south african billionaire, so in this case i'd rather think of the modern slaves working in places like this many of whom served beyoncé and her team during their stay there..

But that doesn’t mean we need to be OK with that.

No, but she only seems to care about money

like any other current pop star including your fave

Beyonce sis GLOBALLY in demand. A quick Google search will show you MJ also went there. Global icons must be seen around the globe.

No one sane would turn that offer down.

so at what price it wouldn't be acceptable?

That’s fair. I guess for me the difference is this is a  state sponsored event, whereas continuing to perform in America is for her fans / not racist people

Yes she is a global legend. MJ too.  But my question is - for a gay rights supporter coming off a queer influenced album, should she be performing for government officials who are currently actively oppressing and imprisoning gay people.
