I don't really believe this stuff, 60 years passed from the Elizabeth Taylor one and despite the mess that happened that time with production (different times and circumnstances), Elizabeth Taylor only benefited from that role cementing her as legend, to these days in the general audience mind when people talk about 'Cleopatra' they think to Elizabeth Taylor, Villeneuve is coming from several high budgets movies located in deserts with 'Dune', he knows how to handle a big production in those locations and he will do a good job.

 

If anything for the 'Cleopatra' role, charisma is the most important thing an actress should have, this is why the Elizabeth Taylor portrait is the most remembered, it wasn't about her beauty, but her huge charisma, a feat I don't see in Zendaya.

 

As for the backlash, I don't think it wouldn't be any different from the small minory of people not wanting Gaga as Harley.

Gaga as Cleopatra would be like HOG on steroids. So many people bitched about her playing an Italian and criticized her accent. People would want an actual Egyptian actress, and complain about it lbr.

Honestly who cares about those people? There will be always people complain about anything Gaga will do roles-movies wise, at the end Gaga she still delivered her part and made a movie success because of her presence and performance on it.

 

It's like saying that Gaga shouldn't have accepted to do 'Joker' because there are people bitching about it wanting Margot Robbie or another actress.

 

Villeneuve 'Cleopatra' is an American production anyway, they will never choose an unknown Egyptian actress, the name of the actress will be fundamental to sell the movie to the audience.

Good for Zendaya but she looks NOTHING like a Greek-Macedonian descendant. 
Gaga would have slayed as Cleopatra but as people pointed out it's a low key controversial role so she should stay away from it.
