Chromatica was released in a career perfect climate for her: coming off the big hype of ASIB and her return to dance pop music

it showed cause first day numbers for Chromatica were good, top 3 biggest debuts ever with Lover and thank u next in 2020

but people checked out and never came back! and yes she abandonned the era BUT she had 3 songs get TTH placements, 2 songs sent to radio that were well pushed (#11 and #10 on pop radio when she hasn't seen the top 15 since 2013) but where callouts were so bad, Interscope just didn't push any further like they never do for any of their artists

 

Joanne was coming off: ARTPOP, the whole world turning on her as an artist, pop radio not wanting to touch her after Applause, a total genre switch from what she's done and even visually it was a complete 180 of her career... the album still spent 49 weeks on chart despite being her only album to struggle to find a single that truly sticked on its own. she had to fight for MR so hard bc radio didn't touch it, she had no streaming push which was THE thing to have, and her genre was very not on trend with the 2016 vibe: Lemonade, Dangerous Woman are MILES AWAY from Joanne... so yes Joanne was no smash era but it did what it could with what it was permitted to have...

that’s b/c Lemonade & DW are actually good albums not utter noisy trash. and wym Interscope literally payola’d MR into PR for both Z100 & KIIS when the latter wouldn’t even add it to their stations for months and then suddenly out of the blue after Superbowl, they add it and put it PR ASAP. streaming push wouldn’t have helped, again the GP literally said no! the utter tragic WW peaks were just pathetic despite her actually doing promo elsewhere as well. ROM didn’t have any of that, Interscope literally just pulled the plug the moment they first saw the subpar callouts (lbr they weren’t the worst) instead of giving it a fighting chance. she just didn’t care for Chromatica at the end. 

I still maintain that y'all calling a 4M selling record and underperformance is funny. Y'all are acting like Chromatica was a Smile/Lotus/Britney Jean type of record.

Smile/Lotus/BJ were FLOPS like utter flops

In my opinion. Artpop/Joanne/Chromatica all fall under the “moderate” category. They did not do poorly nor impressively. They’re just in the middle; the bare minimum essentially.

It's not a smash, but it's not some mega-flop. Considering where album sales have been for a while where even records with multiple hits can't push much, 4M (maybe 5M) in the long run is fine.

Exactly. She'll probably continue to have a Cher-like run- consistently respectable numbers with smash eras here and there, potentially much farther into her career than her peers. 

People gave up on Gaga after Joanne and then ASIB happened. People gave up on Miley and then Flowers happened. The thing with Gaga is that the GP is open to her whichever avenue she wants to explore. They may not necessarily flock immediately but if it works, it will be a huge hit. I mean, her next movie is a sequel to a comic book movie staged as a musical. 
 

US radio can suck it, on the other hand. Imagine if they embraced Shallow the way the rest of the globe and their very own audience did.

I thought that got debunked? Martin Scorsese is planning to make a movie about Jesus, but the "article" that said Gaga was playing Mary Magdalene was fabricated.

3.5M and Smile did 2.4M which is only 1M less so I wouldn't be so brave. What if Smile had a single collab with Ariana and Blackpink?
