 I feel like there's a clear division of eras between the two (except for the older and newer samples which are not used to reference anything particularly).

 

Cowboy Carter starts in an era in which a lot of british bands (Beatles, Rolling Stones, Manfred Mann… see British Invasion) were covering songs from african american artists and getting more success and recognition with it: an american requiem, if you will.

 

Renaissance covers the evolution of dance music after Disco Demolition Night, using a modern take on the only actual disco song (possibly the most recognizable disco song) to close the album as a proper renaissance.

 

I feel like following this, act iii will focus on covering the times between these two eras, and possibly overlapping with both. My prediction is that it will start somewhere in the late 60s with the Motown sound and some of their superstars: Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross, covering entirely the 70s with funk pioneers Prince, Parliament, Funkadelic, Betty Davis, Bootsy Collins, and maybe some nods to Talking Heads (who used a lot of african rhythms with their producer Brian Eno) and David Bowie (who mixed disco and rock with Nile Rodgers), and end in the mid 80s with melodic rock in the vein of Tina Turner.

I feel Iike Work It Out should be a bigger classic in Bey's discography. It doesn't get appreciated enough!

 

Also, she was such a brilliant performer at such young age. Easy to see why she was the blueprint for so many girlies since the 2000s.
