Ya I mean knowing it only sold 54,000 (in the first full tracking week Beyoncé gave an album since 2011) is so shocking...

 

...but then again I really think its entire lead-up was too confusing for the GP. I remember even one of my pop-culture savvy friends was surprised she had a new album....weeks after it came out...

 

I blame the fact that Spirit was the lead for the OST, and for The Gift, and the OST came out the week before... I don't think it was very clear for the GP that there was a new The Lion King-inspired album...and why lol.

I really think Spirit and scheduling ruined the entire soundtrack. I remember being so annoyed after streaming the entire project and they chose …. #that as lead.  Tbh idk what would have been a great lead there were so many strong options.

I did one the Apple Fitness Renaissance workouts this morning. I always listen to REN when I work out anyways, but it was cute

I don't think it would've worked. Cuff It would've become a hit regardless (it's that good of a song), but she would've been accused of jumping on the 2020 disco trend and would've come off as a follower, not a leader.

 

BMS was the perfect lead because it brought back a sound that has been dormant for a few years now (90s house) and is the kind of track that only works as a lead single. It was the perfect statement to start an era centered around escapism.

The Gift was kinda ahead of its time. The amount of Afrobeats songs that have blown up since 2019

It’s perfect that she didn’t. Single 2 has to be strong and CUFF IT is just that.

Arguably one of Bey’s boldest, most polarizing moves tbh. She had the opportunity to put out a singalong that was more in tune with the TLK which probably would have smashed, but didn’t. The way anticipated the absolute most from that era  I still stream TG more than Lemonade and IASF tho

nah but same TG still gets mad streams from me, arguably some of her best work on the soundtrack!

BMS was exactly the OMG, "I'm back", "different for Beyonce" slap us across the face she needed to signal her return and snatch back the GP. Lyrically and musically it set the right tone for the rest of what was to come. 

 

That said, I do think this has been her best 1-2 punch of singles since her debut (CIL and BB). 

 

Cuff It is unquestionably the most hit-worthy track on the album, but having to battle for that status (which is kinda irritating) saw it develop legs, an omnipresence with the GP, and grew it into an authentic career smash that she'll be performing forever. Not even being revisionist (because we all know the mess that has been the last six months), but its trajectory is such a win. Dare I say a bigger win than if it opened big and then dropped like a rock.

I think there will be another tour. I can see her doing less dates for this than FWT, but going back on the road in 2024 after act ii.

I have not listened to TG in many years and don’t intend to. I still have no idea what she was thinking. It was basically a project in narcissism. She took one of the most beloved animated classics by generations and nationalities far and wide, and tried to make it all about her. Not only that, but the link was painfully tenuous. 

 

Not saying it’s bad because she’s incapable of creating anything bad. But yeah, it was bad for me 

 

I’m just glad I can put it behind me. Renaissance really was a Renaissance for me in terms of my love and adoration of this queen. 

I will say that Otherside is a masterpiece and will be my funeral song so I’m thankful to TG for that at least

She always did too much but it was always so authentically her and that’s why it worked (she also had and has the talent to back it up). Not to be shady, but other girls do too much and it’s just so try hard and inauthentic, and that’s why it just doesn’t work. Not to mention, they simply don’t have the ability to dance and sing at the same time like her so it always come across messy.
