OMG, I came here to say I feel sorry for people who truly cannot appreciate it because it is a DEEP cultural cut. I think I wanna do a piece on it actually, I really want to detail the genius of this song out for those who might not understand how enriched it is with southern US, religious heritage but juxtaposed with the idea of sexual freedom or the idea of dancing with sexual freedom (stripping and twerking) which are often the focal points for slutshaming amongst women in black culture. Beyonce specifically ties those ideals back to herself and the average southern, "church girl" to pretty much say, "Yes, I can dance as nasty and slutty as I want and still be a regular, everyday woman in control of MYSELF, this is not for men, I dance like this for freedom, for expression, and if that pays the bills for some women who do is as a profession, so be it!" Cause at the end of the day we all do what we have to do to survive.

 

Edit: I also think it's important to note that "church girls" are so often thought of as these perfect angels who will never and should never misbehave or be unladylike. They grow up in church from the time they are born! It's very old, southern, traditional thinking and that's why Bey starts the song off with a hymn like production before invoking the twerk and bass to mix the song into one. Like ugh, this woman took her TIME and made this song.

Initially CG was my least favourite on the album, but it's done the biggest 180 on me. A masterpiece

Not only Beyonce, but Mariah gets disrespected on the daily and they're on par with Whitney on the technical level.

 

Mariah (52) even with vocal nodules is outsinging Whitney in her late 40s. And Bey's voice will age better than both of these women because she takes care of herself. The perception of a vocalist and an entertainer hardly ever crosses. For a pop girl: you're either a dancer who sings or a one trick with a mic stand without the extravaganza. Bey's a master in these areas, a rare breed and people cannot wrap their minds around that because it's just an uncommon thing in the music industry. It's true she doesn't have those notable mega hit 90s ballads or just big climax songs in general like Adele's, it's sort of a facade really that caters to their image and to the point. Bey is multi-dimensional with far more layers and has several songs that are sometimes even more technically challenging if they really dissect the music. Many vocalists will CROAK doing Love on Top and Bey could have easily gone higher because of impeccable breath control and ease of transitions in her upper register. It's either people aren't familiar with her work beyond the surface level like you mentioned or they just HATE to see a black woman who has it all and can do it all, purposefully ignorant. It's no excuse when she has 25 years worth of receipts accessible on Youtube. They would rather call her overrated because she's Beyonce because they're slow, missing a few brain cells, selectively deaf, or miserable.

The ballads she does have arent all that spectacular with the exception of Bigger which is exactly what I want to see more of. Yeah I’d love a big Whitney type power ballad, but if she hasn’t tried it by now, she never will.

The samples used here are incredible this is so good this also reminded me how much of a discography highlight Black Parade is, I need her to sing this live at least once!

TBH whether the no promo is intentional or not, you cannot deny that the benefit is that it serves for a near blank canvas on which Beyoncé can launch new music and still make it into a moment. Her "return" still feels imminent, which...for however annoying it may be to wait, is still rather exciting and if not exciting, then when she does meaningfully return it will FEEL exciting, like a release (no pun intended).

Adele would be the greatest voice of our time (..........) according to the GP solely because she sings ballads in a dress, so yeah. 

 

Halo is great when it comes to its simple yet impressive vocal production, however she really put the whole music industry to shame with Listen, so I wish she had kept it on tour. To think that even a soprano like Jessie J has openly expressed how challenging that song is. 

 

Single Ladies and RTW are both compelling, the latter boasts entire phrases and verses sung in C5/C#5, but I see your point.

I wonder if we're getting a ballad like that on Act 2 though.

Apparently she doesn't feel like showing off like before, or at least that was the case with Renaissance.

I completely understand this especially with it being 3 acts! Keeps everything fresh!

Her voice severely declined once she started smoking and doing a lot of drugs. On the bright side, it gave her voice a tone that literally makes her who she is today
