Logged into Twitter on this fine B’Day and once again it’s the bi-annual Adele vs Bey vocal comparison. You’d think Plastic off the Sofa would have ended it. Nigerian Twitter sees a slightly better than average yt singer with a mic stand and it’s groundbreaking. :toofunny2: The amount of times Mariah gets discredited too. I think it’s a cry for help. I’m waiting for Sia vs Bey in a few months. :duca:

Literally saw someone say that Beyoncé "whisper sings". :rip: Some people are just delusional, it can't be helped at this point.

Seen the same Bey v Adele (and others) tweets. It's pretty farcical.

Bey gets people so hot and bothered and I feel a lot of those Twitter critics aren't actually musically inclined, so play down her abilities based on personal dislike (of "her") or on the merit of not liking the type of music she puts out. In reality, any such debate should solely be based on one artist's best vocal showing compared to another's best showing. Simples.

Playing devil's advocate (just to try and begin to understand the dummies take), Bey has always had this rump shaker, uptempo positioning and also hasn't (for at least a decade) made a point of releasing vocally demanding music. So, a simpleton's flawed logic would see them say "this person wears a ball gown and belts a lot" and "this one dances and rap-sings a lot" and come to a conclusion...all without truly engaging with the source material (aka each artist's best vocal showings). Flop behavior, but almost easy to see how so many fall for the okie doke.

Where I get confused is how so many people (probably realizing they don't know the fullness of what they're talking about), still break their heels rushing to social media to be wrong, strong, and loud with it.

Adele is winning the AOTY. Just look at the Emmys, her special won everything. Makes me laugh

It’s nuts she won those Emmys when Homecoming & Lemonade didnt. These award shows don’t even hide their racism.

Edited by QueenBeyoncé

I hope she doesn't even submit for AOTY. If she wants to submit for the sake of rewarding her collaborators, she can submit for the smaller categories so that they can still have their moment, without putting herself through being denied AOTY another time.

I would hope by now that she's let go of the importance of Grammys. It's way more important that the music connected with people. And this time it truly did. That's worth a billion times what a piece of metal is. She still remains the most awarded woman ever anyway. :fan:

Iono.

The Emmys were clearly making a musical play this year after going with both Adele and the Super Bowl headliners as winners.

I think the Grammys have a very different issue on their hands, though.

Between the drama with Bey, Jay, Drake, Kanye, and many others not effing with them and more dramatically The Weeknd episode, they are working overtime to rehabilitate their image and be seen as musically relevant and reflective. Changed rules, new members, etc.

I've personally observed that the last two shows had a much more diverse winner pool. Less clean sweeps and a kind of "win for all" vibe. There's been wild card winners too (like Jon Batiste taking home AOTY).

Adele is a Grammy darling for sure, but her era has grossly underperformed. Not so much numbers, but the resonance of the actual music. The Las Vegas drama too. Voters see all the ish we see, so - even though they're supposed to be unbiased - they aren't above voting contextually. The context here being that 30 just hasn't hit the way it was clearly supposed to...as an album and era.

Lastly, there's the broadcast element. I remember reading ALOT when the wave of new execs came in about how they were doing a lot of work to repair damaged relationships to get the big names back on the telecast. That being the year Bey was "conveniently" nominated for Black Parade (of all songs), won big for Savage, and made history with her number of career wins. All of that without even giving them a performance. It's giving high-level Olivia Pope-type convos about what Bey will need to play ball with them.

CBS want ratings. Ratings = huge advertising $$$. And Bey = ratings. Especially Performance Bey. Repeating 2017 again undoes all of the above and will only further sever ties with top tier acts and the Grammys. The new breed (Ariana, Bieber, Billie etc) are not top tier enough for an "Old Hollywood" show like the Grammys to rest on. They need the Bey's of the world to be on-board. NEED. Even from a storytelling perspective, an Adele v Beyonce rematch with a different outcome is such a headline and adds to the history of the show in a compelling way.

In short (lol), Adele could indeed sweep. Such entities have almost purposefully gone against the grain on a kind of ego trip and to "protect the guard". I'm just saying that I don't think Adele is a shoo-in or certainty. From an image, commercial, and and critical standpoint, they are almost more incentivized than ever to give Bey her flowers.

Adele winning, regardless of the competition, is usually a victory for the GP. And Bey losing gives them WAY more media coverage than her performing. No need to rewrite how things are.

And no, 30 was never supposed to be a huge era. Adele herself stated that she didn’t want to replicate the success of 25 and Hello, and that’s why they went with Easy On Me. Ironically, it still went #1 for 10 weeks in the US. The rest of the best tracks of the album are 6 minutes long or have audios of her speaking on mental health. It’s not that the music didn’t resonate with the public, it’s that it was never conceptualized to be that type of album.

Beyoncé isn't winning AOTY with RENAISSANCE, and I hate that we as fans are still trying to validate her albums through award shows like the Grammys.

Y'all just saw Adele sweep at the Emmy's, after Carpool Kareoke got one over HOMECOMING, not to mention Beyoncé's other nominations like BIK.

Beyoncé is often overlooked by her peers when it's not her genre category or something they typically associate her with. We know this.

The whole Grammy conversation is tired, especially when we've been through it twice before and lost both times :rip:

Adele is going back to Vegas just in time for the voting and I’m sure she will do something to give the voters another reason to vote her. Adele 2023, Taylor 2024. It’s all very predictable.

There’s no way Taylor is winning AOTY again so soon. Even the Grammys know better than that. No performer has won the award 4 times.

Adele is winning (her still sold more than all albums released in the last years, was critically acclaimed, her small concerts were a big draw and featured a bunch of industry members who probably vote) and if she doesn't (which I doubt very much), there's Silk Sonic. Adele hasn't lost a single Grammy's nomination and Bruno hasn't since Uptown Funk. They're Grammy's darlings.

It will also benefit them if Beyoncé loses for press. The people voting already made a big deal of the excuses they'll use : 24 songwriters on a song, too many samples etc. Plus Renaissance came and went, promo wise. Adele did way more with her album and she is going to be on Vegas soon.

I agree that Adele has a strong chance, but I totally disagree with the idea of there being any press benefit for the Grammys to snub Bey. Quite the contrary.

The Grammys are currently trying to shake off the notion of being dated, out of touch, too traditionalist, and racist. In a post BLM world, post The Weeknd saga, post Kanye urinating on the trophy, post Jay Z snub, there is no press benefit to consistently shunning one of the most deserving Black artists in favor of the... usual.

Would they do it? Absolutely. Out of ego and maintaining whatever dwindling sense prestige they feel the show still has. But it will fundamentally count against them in the court of public opinion. And people power shouldn't be discredited because they are the ones who deliver ratings and control the perception sway of platforms like the Grammys.

The irony of all the Adele speak is that it could easily swing in the favor of Harry Styles, Grammy darling Bruno (Silk Sonic), or Kendrick.

For me, Kendrick would actually sting the most. Because he's a) critically acclaimed, b) black, and c) has also been snubbed in the past.

A win for him just makes it near impossible for any rally-cry around a Bey snub being able to take off because Kendrick ticks so many of the redemption boxes too. The issue here, though, is that his album is nowhere near as good as Renaissance (nor does it really compare to his other albums).

IMO, I'm not actively "expecting" a Bey win. I'm just not totally discrediting the possibility of it either. Especially as the circumstances are a little different this time contextually.

I don't know. The Weeknd's snub is the biggest snub ever imo and they did that AFTER Lemonade's snub, their own ex-president outing them for being very racist with proof, Kanye's stunt and after BLM. And that year, Taylor won her 3rd AOTY.

I am not sure about that, they're really strategic with it. The Weeknd couldn't be about racism when in the same ceremony Bey was used as a token : "the woman who had the most Grammy wins ever is black".

That would actually be my favorite scenario for the same reasons.

Rally-cries serve the press, make her seem overrated, entitled (although it's not her fault) and just bring more vitriol. Factually they don't change much, ST losing was such a huge news yet she still lost again for Lemonade (one of the most critically album ever and it was way more successful and discussed ww at that point than Renaissance).

AOTY is between Harry and Adele, they already gave it to a black man this year and Beyoncé isn't getting it so yeah.

Taylor Swift for 2024 is complicated though, 4 AOTY's is alot and you know there'll be backlash. The GP jump at anything to call women overrate/overhyed and Beyoncé and Taylor get the bulk of that despite being pretty low-key themselves.

It became cool to hate Taylor after 1989 won over Kendrick, and she's constantly being dragged on Reddit for being "overrated".

I hear ya. But that whole Beyonce /  "woman with the most Grammys ever is black' thing will absolutely count against the Grammys in the not too distant future.

Inevitably a think-piece or viral Twitter thread will point out how hollow the title it is when almost all the wins are genre-specific. The injustice and deep, deep, internal issues will lay themselves bare for all to see. Like, how can the Grammys all at once hail her as their most decorated winner only to never (over the course of 25 years) bestow her with the top honor/s. It literally doesn't make sense and will only become more of an issue the more R&B awards they toss her way while trying to spin it as some historic stat.

Yeah, that makes sense. Let's hope.

Im not even pressed about who wins it this year or next. REN feels like something more for the fans than being Grammy bait so it doesn’t have a chance this year(multiple samples always bring so much drama ?).

All I’m annoyed by and don’t want to see is when the artist who ends up winning, puts the spotlight on the fact that she just lost :noparty:

Not trying to see her congratulating the winner while holding her tears back

So cringy :deadbanana2:

I finally like Cuff It more. I always had such a hard time listening to it in full.

Now I am in love with the instruments behind and like the chorus. Still at the bottom of my list so far but it has grown on me.

She should stop submitting for these awards. There’s so much bias and politics that goes on behind the scenes and we really shouldn’t be putting these awards on a pedestal. Her losing Emmys for her Super Bowl, Lemonade, Homecoming, AND BiK. And then I see Eminem winning for his SB and Adele with her special, both doing the absolute bare minimum. It’s disgusting and tired.
