My parents grew up in Yugoslavia (in the socialist republic of Slovenia) and they both have fond memories of it. It's a mixture of Slovenia being the most industrial of the republics and the independence being relative painless (in comparison to what happened in Bosnia). Tito's split with the USSR and the consequent non-aligned movement helped with Yugoslavia doing its own thing instead of the Cold War shenanigans. Tito did very well to keep all the ethnic tensions at bay, until he passed. The thing about Yugoslavia is that it had to exist in order for the southern Slavic entities not to be absorbed by others after WW1, but it was more of a co-existence rather than a permanent thing that could last. Socialism was a great way to unite the people but even by the end, there were qualms about all the money being funnelled into the capital (Belgrade), similar as there is with Brussels now. Most of the socialist things (free education, university, health care, public transport for kids and pensioners) are ingrained into the culture as a result and assumed of the state to provide. Unfortunately, it's now ruled by a right wing party who'll try to do the most to undo this and privatise things. Melania is a kii though, she's not well perceived in Slovenia. She hasn't publicly acknowledged Slovenia in a while and is perceived as a sell out, particularly during this second term. Her family is a mess as well, her dad knocked up another woman and there's a lot of gossip about his job and how he got his money in Yugoslavia. This is all Wendy allegedly of course, no lawsuits here.
