The Mandala Effect refers to a phenomenon where a large group of people share a false memory about a past event or detail. This collective misremembering often leads people to believe they recall something differently than how it actually occurred. The term was coined by Fiona Broome after she realized that many people believed Nelson Mandala had died in prison in the 1980s, even though he was released in 1990 and died in 2013. 

Examples of the Mandala Effect:
Nelson Mandala's Death: As mentioned, the most well-known example involves the false memory of Nelson Mandala's death in prison. 
"Mirror, Mirror" or "Mirror, Mirror on the Wall": Many recall the Evil Queen in Snow White saying "Mirror, mirror on the wall," but the actual line is "Mirror, mirror." 
"Star Wars" Quote: The line "Luke, I am your father" is often misquoted. The actual line is "No, I am your father". 
"Looney Tunes" Logo: Some remember the "Looney Tunes" logo including the letter "g" in "Tunes". 
The Berenstain Bears: Many remember the children's book series as the "Berenstein Bears," but the correct spelling is "Berenstain Bears". 
"Sex and the City" Title: Many believe the title of the TV show is "Sex in the City".

Years ago I could've swore hearing Gene Hackman died, then I found out he was still alive. Then he ended up dying and was it huge news because of the circumstances

Businesses and corporations play along with the Mandela effect for free publicity. Some of the biggest ones that come to mind are Fruit of the Loom saying their logo never had a cornucopia in it, despite people pulling out old Fruit of the Loom t-shirts and old promo pics to prove that the logo did once have a cornucopia. Berenstain Bears is another one where people have pulled out old merchandise where both Berenstain and Berenstein spellings were used on VHS tapes and CD's. The discrepancies were probably production related issues. And really old Monopoly editions did have the guy wearing a monocle on the bank notes.

 

It keeps the myth alive for the people really into the Mandela effect and it gives the companies free buzz, so I guess for them they think why ruin the illusion when it's getting people talking.

There are many instances of this but I cant remember now. I think I have, like many other people have stated above, thought that some specific famous people had died but then they are actually still alive
