I think Joni has always viewed Madonna as being responsible for the normalisation and commodification of hyper-sexualisation in female pop stars. This (in her view) has led to a perceived erosion of 'authentic artistry'...

Joni is just a product of second wave feminism which in large part rejected women being used as sexual objects to an almost militant degree. It's interesting because Joni herself, was called a ***** by Rolling Stone who posted a "love chart" of all her famous exes, despite the fact that her work was never sexually open and certainly not explicit.

 

You'd think that the fact that she didn't escape the ***** allegations herself despite a "respectable" presentation of a singer-songwriter would make her more sympathetic to women who came after her, but overall Boomers have proven themselves to be a generation capable of a incomprehensible amount of cognitive dissonance.

i just read ann powers' book about joni and one of the things she talks about a lot is how joni worked really hard to be taken seriously on the same level as her male peers, so i can imagine that type of hotgirl pop stars weren't something she respected v much

 

i think it's unfair on madonna tbh, esp by erotica she's using her sexuality to really challenge people in uncomfortable ways, but also, joni is well known for being extremely bitchy lol

This woman made a whole album around doing blackface. I'm talking album cover, concept and performances. Who gives a **** what she thinks. That's why sis cannot walk or barely stand on her own in 2025.

Like a true Boomer. She's right about Madonna though 

Well one on hand I understand her reasonings on the other she seems to have become one of the very things she was highly critical and satirical of. 

 

But this seems to be the norm for most people (especially artists) after they hit a certain age. 

 

I suppose I could argue Madonna could do an Hejira but Joni Mitchell could not do an Erotica. Take that as you will

How do I put this. What the Janet Jackson featured artist does has class to it. I'll say that. 

Hejira is the best album of all-time and she's the greatest lyricist ever and GOAT but she is also such a hater lol

 

She compared Madonna to Nero the murderous Roman dictator for marking a downturn in culture  She has shaded many others too, she is messy and gives zero fucks.
