Back in the late 90's, early '00s, it was all about Britney Spears, as it should've been. Jessica Simpson enjoyed success as well. Even Christina Aguilera had a couple of hits.

 

Mandy Moore came in with Candy and I Wanna Be With You, and though they were decent efforts, she obviously was unable to truly have a profitable music career.

 

What went wrong?

 

 

She grew up and realized she didn't want to make pulp pop music anymore.

The over the top mouth movements in her music videos. 

She fell into that same awkward spot that Jessica Simpson and Willa Ford did. She couldn't dance/perform as well as Britney or sing as well as Xtina, so she got left behind like the other bubblegum girls. 

There was only room for so many Britney knock offs.

Mandy Moore couldn't really shine or be seen in a Britney, Xtina, Pink & Destiny's Child world. She was a tad too safe, not with just her image but her music, and there wasn't anything to really have a hold on the public after 'Candy'. 'Be With You' is a classic though!

But Successica can sing.

Basic white woman = success 

Britney and Legend X were already there

She was fourth in line for the blond white girl spot after Brit, Xtina, Jessica.   Britney had A+ songs and performance, Xtina and Jessica could "sing", there was nothing standout about Mandy.

I think it just comes down to timing and the way the industry worked back then. There really wasn't space for multiple women to thrive at once, specially in that late '90s/early 2000s pop scene. The machine was already fully behind Britney, Christina, and to a lesser extent Jessica... Once those lanes were filled, everyone else (even if talented) was kind of pushed to the side or boxed in. There just wasn't the space for everyone to win like there is now.

 

She didn't get the same push or budget, and the public (and media) just didn't have the bandwidth to make room for another girl doing something similar. 

 

Compare that to today where literally anyone can drop a song, go viral on TikTok, and build a platform without needing a major label's full backing. It's still hard don't get me wrong, but artists have way more agency and visibility now. Back then, if your single didn't chart or your video didn't get played on TRL, it was basically over. 

Look at where Mandy is now in her personal life.

In the early days of Britney, there was a very small chance she might not have stuck in the culture and held her position as 'that' girl and Mandy's team thought there was a glimmer of hope they could make it all about Mandy instead.

 

Something very similar is happening in the present (only at a later stage) in the career of Harry Styles, by Benson Boone's team.

she needed better songs, her albums beyond her handful of singles are all filler and could've been sung by anyone. 

She sucked as a pop girl. She excels in acting

bcs she suffers from a lack of taste, she constantly feels the need to **** all over candy even tho it's her only good song

anyway Mandy has her 00s cult classics, Disney checks from Tangled, and is an Emmy + Golden Globe nominee she's more than succeeded (and still has plenty of time to achieve a lot more)

 

 

 

I thought she was very successful?? Her songs were well known. She was at her peak as a pop girl when she acted in Princess Diaries & A Walk To Remember. Her albums and soundtrack songs were very popular. They were even performed in my school talent shows. 
 

If I recall correctly, she didn't want to keep singing pop songs and so she pursued more indie music and a film career.

She had pretty good music success for being in the group of girls she debuted at the same time with and was later able to became a successful actress, which her peers all failed at.

 

She was my favorite out of the Xtina/Brit/Jessica era girls. She still makes music and how/when she wants instead of trying to churn out potential typical radio hits. I'd say out of all the girls her career is the most well balanced and she leans more into acting which she has the most success at. I'd call that a win, not everyone needs to stay a bottle blonde pop girlie, we have plenty of those. She carved her own nice career path 

 

Plus, she has this banger, so she still won
