Cultural shifts you remember?

Featured Replies

What cultural shifts do you remember that has become normalized today ?

I remember when six packs became the thing in the mid-late 2000s here. Before that, it was seen as a serious pro athletes thing, but suddenly everyone was talking about six packs, how a six pack was the hottest thing ever, Christian Bale's six pack, Edward Cullen's six pack, every guy hitting the gym to get one, all the stories of their six pack disappearing after a week. It's still a thing now, but people are definitely not as wow'ed by it anymore, it has just sort of become the standard.

This probably also ties into the sports to fitness shift. People were doing all kinds of sports; soccer, martial arts, swimming, handball, dancing, then just going to the gym to work out became the norm.

I know this topic varies a lot depending on age and location, so let me hear :gaycat5:

Baggy clothes at the end of last decade. I swear skinny jeans suddenly just VANISHED from society. It's kind of insane how unpopular they are now considering they were all the rage (especially during 2014-2015 which was peak skinny jeans era)

Omg yes, in middle school I thought skinny jeans was the only fit that existed because that was the only fit you could get in stores :deadbanana: A Y2K boot cut or baggy was seen as corny and outdated :dies:

I remember how common homophobia was in society, and then Lady Gaga released Born This Way and everything changed.

Everybody wanting to be a billionaire in the 2010s (see: that one Bruno Mars song), but now in 2020s most people appalled with the idea (and rightly so) and with horrible examples reinforcing it (Bezos, M*sk, etc.)

This is definitely a weird one because while many people are complaining about it, I see just as many people still obsessing over being wealthy both, irl and online. But we definitely got a lot more critical and it'll probably continue to go that way.

Life before and after 9/11. The way airports use to be like bus stations where you could walk right up to the gate to meet or drop someone off.

Instagram definitely cause dramatic uptick in materialism and selfish behavior.

The shift was noticeable.

I've seen people from the backwoods suddenly flaunting everything from bags to their travels, to unpacking their new carpets, etc, as soon as they install the app and discover what people do in it.

Oh definitely. I'm from a small town, and people there care much more about looking a certain way, owning designer, going on exotic vacations, having money, so on, now. If you were to plop a 2025 person down in the same town in 2004, people would've found them vapid, self-absorbed and superficial :skull:

not quite what OP was looking for but i would say 1989 was a massive shift in pop music in general.

as for non-music culture shifts, i dont think i can come up with one. i dont pay attention to fashion or anything shallow like that to notice.

Mostly how our awareness of problematic language has changed since I was a teenager. Using 'that's so gay', '******ed', 'spaz', and even where I'm from in the U.K. using racial slurs like p*ki and ch*nk was suuuuper common.

Going from the bleakness, paranoia and homophobia of the Bush years into the election night and subsequent victory of Obama. The vibe shift around the world was instantaneous. You just had to be there :jonnycat:

Late 2000s dance pop and kind of "weird" pop girl aesthetic after Lady Gaga

9/11, the rise of social media, and the way politics turned completely ugly. When it comes to music, I'd say the switch to pop punk/rock to EDM and 80s inspired sounds to indie pop.

The biggest one for me is the political shifts from 2015 until now— it feels like decades worth of social change (good and bad) in 10 years

Well the shift from having a social life to life for many being on social medias now is the worst shift so far.

I feel like it also effected soooo many other areas for the worse - mental health, politics, rise of bigotry and ignorance, selfishness, materialsm etc...

emerging markets are getting their shine and Hellweird can't dictate what people should listen and watch anymore

i've noticed post-covid how much more intense/hateful people are on social media and how this commentary has been commodified. it's not just with celebrities/politicians either, even khia influencers get snark reddits made about them :deadbanana2:
