Actually, as I'm a corporate, but not an IP lawyer, I may be wrong, but my semi-educated guess is that the simplest explanation is true: Taylor has not granted Republic/UMG an exclusive license to her music. In general, labels insist on artists signing perpetual grants - ie transferring the right to collect the negotiated proportion of royalties for the duration of the artists lifetime + 70 years. This is the case for the first 6 albums that are currently held by Apollo. If the artist insists on retaining ownership of their masters, in most cases the label would expect at least an exclusive license deal, in which they are able to collect their share for a fixed time period, after which all rights revert back to the artist. Crucially, the exclusive license generally grants control over the recording, which is enforceable even against the artist. As an example, an artist who has given their label an exclusive license would not be able to remove their songs from Spotify because they disagree with Joe Rogan. In Taylor's case, I'd guess that she has decided that Republic may have some share of the revenue, but no control. I'd assume that less middlemen also mean more money for Taylor.

 

Incidentally, Taylor is domiciled in Tennessee for tax purposes, right?

I usually like when there are guests in Superbowl performances, but I don't think it would make sense for her to bring anyone other than a country artist, and I'm not too sure about a full on country song in the middle of a Superbowl set. Justin to do exile would also be weird as the song is way too slow/sad for a performance like that. Or maybe if she somehow features Harry Style on Style for 1989 TV then that would be okay I guess.

 

I could see the YBWM/SIO part switched with the next 2 (in order to finish with the really upbeat SIO), but I really love the idea of ending on Wildest Dream which is by far one of the best song of her entire career.

She and Rihanna are basically the only two big artists left these days that haven't done it, so any time anything SB related at all comes up their names get tossed in the running despite both of them probably turning it down every year for a decade

This is probably mine, but DWOHT sometimes replaces So It Goes. I wish DWOHT had a better chorus because those verses are GOLDEN. Also, CIWYW is #1 while Delicate is #3/4 sometimes
