For many years, the word on ATRL was The Fame was dated, it lost polls to Beyonce and Britney albums. Without setting girls against each other and without relying TOO much on streams - is this still how you feel?

Nope. It never was dated tbh. The only thing about The Fame is that first half obliterates the second half.

The Fame is "dated" because everyone after her copied her sound and now we all associate that type of dance pop with that period of time.

I will always wonder if it sounds cheap because of budget or if it was an intentional mastermind play to have her sing about being rich and famous over tinny instrumentals 

It is of its time like most electronic pop albums that use synths that are trendy during that time. Not everything is shade. Femme Fatale is dated too.

Yes but it's intentionally dated with 80s production. And as mentioned, the singles are timeless classics.

Yes, dated in the sense that it sounds like 2008-2009 because it is an album that defined an era in music. All of the classics from the 60s, 70s, 80s, etc are still a product of their time but that doesn't make them any less good. Songs like Never Gonna Give You U, Take On Me, Beat It, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, etc scream 80s and they are all "dated".

 

The "dated" critique rarely ever makes sense to me. It's only valid when an artist is trying to pull from a certain era in music, and they end up doing it in a very lazy, unimaginative, and creatively bankrupt way without adding any new flavor (see: all of the songs sampling 80s tracks and basically singing karaoke over the instrumental).

The fact so many ATRLers don't understand the meaning of the word "dated" is concerning. It has nothing to do with a song's/album's qualities or its streams 

 

The Fame is undeniably dated as most of the electronic music that came out around that time and it is not necessarily a bad thing. Many classics and masterpieces are dated too.

You all need to understand the actual meaning of the term dated and its implications for once

A lot of that era's production either hasn't aged well or is just very obviously of it's time but a lot of other music from around then has fared worse than The Fame. TF still sounds really good for the most part even with some dated sounding production. If anything songs like JD, PF, Paparazzi, SB ect sound nostalgic in a great way.

Sometimes music sounds like the time it was released, and it's fine!
