You're both saying the same thing though? Which is that naevis needed to be more human and interactive People are still attached to the plave avatars in a way they never were to naevis or the ae's.

 

Hatsune Miku should have been the manual here if they wanted to do a full virtual idol imo. She needed a much more distinct image and sound from the rest of the group and to be pushed constantly from day one. SM always has interesting group ideas but with zero follow through(EXO superpowers, RV concept, SHINee being hip hop+r&b driven instead of generic dance pop, the version of NCT we were originally promised, the grace, other SNSD subunits, etc).

I edited for more clarity already. The ae's had real(iconic) humans behind them but the people didn't care at all because it was just ps2 aespa. They could have done more and given more content to attract fans.

 

 

It was obvious to me from the early ae's stages that they had the literal aespa girls doing cheap motion capture work not unlike plave(you can always tell because motions aren't precise). At some point they switched to actual animation for them and naevis and it looked great but cost them the ability to release stuff often.  A single intern could have been the motion capture double for all 5 of them to achieve the same end results as the early videos and they wouldn't have needed to vanish. 

 

I still don't even buy that naevis's singing was an AI voice and not just comped and heavily processed vocals from the aespa members. There's more SM could have done.

 

 

The original plan was for the ae's to be interactive with fans and for naevis to be a fully virtual idol. Neither of these things really happened and would have gone really far to making all 5 of them feel more human.

I wonder if this would smash today. It's essentially Gee + proto-Newjeans. It's definitely what I expected from that Hearts2Hearts group.

Loona had an uphill battle because they were a nugu gg during the most competitive generation for girl groups ever in Korea and internationally their fans were social media terrorists on the level of army and blinks without the popularity to back it up. If they were a gen 2 or 4 group when audiences were more receptive to multiple GGs they would have been massive.

ok i agree with the later part of your first post

 

but tbh, plave didn't come out of nowhere. there was already a pre-existing market and demand for them after the vtuber craze in korea during covid and a first virtual group (isegye idol). the catch with that kind of idol is that there's still a real person behind the avatar so fans can hold on to that and create a powerful parasocial relationship. i did a study on it like two years ago and it's crazy how parasocial people are with vtubers. so, with their avatars, not only they can maintain their own anonymity but they also create some sort of fantasy about their real identity and the person behind the avatar, which creates that strong bond with the audience.

 

aespa / naevis' concept had nothing of that sort from the start. even if aespa had avatars, we still knew who they were irl, so SM couldn't capitalize on the fantasy and parasocial obsession with them as if they were completely hidden. imo it was a great concept but more in an artistic way rather than marketing. naevis debuting was the most stupid idea imo because even if they tried to go the miku way, there's absolutely zero demand for that in the kpop market. not even in korea. they could have created an iconic mascot though and maybe get domestic brand deals with her, but they pushed her as an idol and completely failed because there was zero demand, the music was not good, and they couldn't even shine with the technology either because it was **** 

 

there's absolutely zero redeeming factor when it comes to naevis atm. SM wanted to debut the first "AI" idol, but nobody asked for it and kpop's core audience has a negative image of AI in the first place

 

in my honest opinion, the only way they could succeed with naevis is to turn her into a mascot. there's a good market for that in korea and i don't think any kpop company has one? kpop stans could find it cringe at first but it would be iconic to have her promote stuff. tbh she's already sorta iconic on korean internet

loona's sound literally influenced today's kpop landscape if we're being honest. there's a reason why jaden jeong is one of the most famous A&R in the country. he's a visionary
