i mean, jo1 are under cjenm, literally one of the biggest entertainment companies in korea... they sing in korean, promote on korean shows, are produced by koreans... but somehow xg, wayv etc are more kpop than them?

this reminded me that most intl kpop stans don't consider qwer as kpop because they don't fit the basic kpop codes that intl fans made inside their heads even thought they demolish most of kpop groups in korea

I mean Day6 demolishes basically everybody except my favs in Korea and aren't considered kpop. Kpop is as much a business model as it is a music genre. It's not an insult to not be kpop, kpop is just a term that comes with a lot of baggage and some groups don't fit the mold for better or worse.

they're considered kpop in korea. however, there's a distinction between IDOLS and bands / artists... IU is kpop but she isn't an idol for example. i think intl fans have that confused. qwer are considered kpop too

Outside of Korea IU is definitely considered a part of the idol industry.

i think there's very different standards inside and outside of korea. IU would be seen as an artist because she usually writes and control all of her stuff while idols are just recording what they've been given most of the time. i think Jennie and the other blackpink girls are moving towards the artist status as well. GD isn't seen as an idol either (i think). however they all make kpop

I feel like JO1 kind of destroys a lot of kpop fans preconceived notions about Japanese idols. JO1 are the fist Japanese group to successfully and seamlessly combine the two genres. Avex and Johnnys tried and failed before jo1 debuted but jo1 is the formula that a lot of other idol groups are following now in Japan.

GD is literally the most famous kpop idol. He trained at SM and also turned YG from a hip hop label to a kpop label.

yeah but he transitioned from idol to artist, in korea's standards at least. idol has a negative connotation for a lot of people (for some reasons )

It will probably be a fluke like TWS, Nct Dream's Candy or Pentagon's Shine. Hoping they smash though, EW&F deserved to do numbers.

When Johnnys tried tho? As far as I know, none of their groups have released a Korean single or album and promoted it on Korean music shows? Maybe I missed it because I've been away for a while.

They've tried recreating the kpop aesthetic and sound with Travis Japan. Their debut single is a clear rip off of the dynamite butter sound that bts found some succes with in the US
