ATRL it's a toxic forum like many other social media platforms, but yeah I totally agree with you, we should be able to enjoy this album and share out thoughts without reading biased non constructive criticism comments

after seeing some critics being ludicrous, slanted and completely indulgent in excessive, unjustified negativity in their reviews towards her and her music, i'm left kind of angry that as a culture this is allowed and people are just letting this hate train move along and get bigger and bigger. and i've never been a huge Katy fan (143 is the first cd I've ever bought by her cause I wanted a signed insert) but it's getting on my last nerve and it also makes me feel really bad for her. is not one critic going to come out and review this album honestly? (maybe there are a couple, but come on, not one positive review?)

I put the album on shuffle this morning on the way to work and "ARTIFICIAL" is definitely becoming one of my favorite songs. I'm currently on my lunch break, but all morning I've had "baby, tell me, tell me, does your heart beat, heart beat?" stuck on a loop in my head. 
 

I should 'accidentally' turn off my AirPods and let my entire office dance away those Monday blues. 
 

the way all the love, nirvana and truth are the best songs on the album whew

One of my co-workers was laughing before as we normally talk a lot on a Monday morning as we catch up on our weekend etc but this morning I've been pretty distant as I've been listening to Katy whilst doing my work. I was like "sorry sis, 143, but we'll catch up at lunch" 

The album is not that bad. I was enjoying it a lot this weekend. Overall, it's a generic electronic pop album, with some skippable songs (imo) like WW, Gimme Gimme, Truth and All The Love, but songs like Crush, Gorgeous, Wonder, Artificial are quite good, and even I'm His, He's Mine, Lifetimes and Nirvana got better with the other songs around. 

 

In my opinion, this album is a solid 6 out o 10. Are the lyrics generic? Yeah, but that's how electronic pop songs from the 2000s are, so I don't mind that much. I just like the overall vibe of this album and there is nothing wrong with that.

 

I understand the hate, even tho it's going to scales that are way beyond just the music, and this whole moment for her sucks honestly. However, I can see this album being seen with kinder eyes in the future. 

not me realizing the lyrics to Truth aren't "give me your password, to your phone and Spotifyyyy"

Like I guess I understand (some of) the moderators' vision behind this banner, at the end of the day I'm not so sure this was just a 'harmless' way to commemorate a moment in pop culture. This just leaves a sour taste no matter what

Probably because for Katy are always underlined only the negative moments, never the countless positive ones. We do not affirm that she's never wrong of course, but rather it's the fact that she's ALWAYS pointed out negatively.

I know it's from the Zane Lowe Apple Music interview she did recently for the album but I haven't had time to watch it.

Now that I've had a few days to take in the album I feel like I can coherently put together some thoughts about it

 

I don't think it's worth even giving oxygen to the critics' reactions considering their history with Katy. I'm old enough to remember that Prism review that was just a list of all the cliches in the lyrics, and that's her only album with generally positive reviews . On here, I think there are some fair criticisms but I don't agree with a lot of them. I personally wouldn't have worked with Dr Luke if I were her, but I also don't agree with the people saying her vocals feel flat or emotionless on most songs. I think this is true of Woman's World and Gimme Gimme, but I think her vocals are pretty rich on songs like Crush, Wonder, and All the Love. There's absolutely a few generic songs like Lifetimes, but it's also one of my favorites on the album. Katy helped pioneer this brand of pop, so it's not surprising that it sounds familiar. At the same time, this album is a lot more cohesive and less generic than Smile.

 

At worst, you could argue this is an Ava Max quality album. I just checked metacritic and apparently Diamonds and Dancefloors has an 80  . I still think this album has a lot more personality than that. I'm still not sure where this will end up in my overall Katy album ranking but it's definitely a huge step up from Smile and probably Witness.

My thoughts on this song have shifted a lot over the past couple months. I think the production and melodies are great, but the lyrics are genuinely awful and her vocals feel very flat and robotic. Releasing this as the lead was definitely a misread of this moment in music. This is like all the negative parts of Katy's music wrapped into one song.

 

Gimme Gimme - 7

You can't make me hate this song, sorry! This is Dressin' Up's little sister, and she's cute! Here the robotic vocals work because it gives it kinda a sexy AI vibe . The melodies are phenomenal throughout. The worst part is the second 21 Savage rap (I kinda want to off myself every time he says "twenny-wun").

 

Gorgeous - 5

This one hasn't really clicked with me yet. The vocal mixing in the chorus seems off and I feel like they could have highlighted the harmonies a lot better. Kim's verse is like a bad repeat of Unholy. This is my boyfriend's favorite on the album though so I guess someone here will be playing it?

 

I'm His, He's Mine - 8

I thought I would hate this song after hearing the snippets, but it was a pleasant surprise. This is by far the best feature and Doechii's verse is actually the highlight here. Katy's little rap parts are actually really nice and full of personality. The first part of Katy's verse is the only letdown, but the prechorus makes up for it.

 

Crush - 9

This is where the album really picks up! This is exactly the kind of music I've been wanting from Katy for years. This song gives me Lady Wood era Tove Lo. The melodies throughout are incredibly strong and the chorus is addictive and explosive. This song will be going #1 in this household!

 

Lifetimes - 8

The real lead single! The chorus and bridge are actual perfection, and the fact that there is a bridge automatically make it one of the best on the album. The only reason this isn't a 10 is that the verse is quite generic and honestly feels like a different song. The lyrics are typical Katy but in an endearing way. This is the type of empowering but fun song people love from Katy (sorry Woman's World!). Honestly will probably make my wedding playlist.

 

All the Love - 10

The first perfect song on the album. Vocals on point, production on point, melodies on point. Even the lyrics here are kinda eating. Honestly no notes, this is everything I needed from Katheryn! Thanks to the excellent transition I feel like this and Nirvana are really one double song.

 

Nirvana - 10

The 1-2 punch is insane . Coming out of that transition with All the Love already starts this on a high note and it never really comes down from that melodic fever. I wasn't initially a stan from the snippets but the whole song totally won me over. The vocal production here is insane. The harmonies in the prechorus are classic Katy and I feel like her unique tone shines through here more than almost any other song. This needed to be at least 30 seconds longer but the ending is great. The only reason this gets away with being so short is that it feels like a part of All the Love.

 

Artificial - 8

I initially didn't love this one at the listening party but it grew on me! This is probably the biggest departure from her signature style but I also feel like it would work reasonably well on Witness. It's giving Dark Horse and Mind Maze's distant cousin but also feels like its own thing. The rap feature adds decently well to the song and is perfectly short.

 

Truth - 5

It's starting to grow on me but it's also kinda still just there for me. I also feel like this would fit well on Witness somewhere in the realm of Bigger Than Me. I think this just sounds like a lot of other songs on the album but without any of the same strong melodies or production flourishes that make it stand out. Maybe the lyrics will help it sink in better?

 

Wonder - 8

Her best album closer since Teenage Dream to be completely honest. Katy's album closers tend to be underwhelming for me, but I think this both sums up the album and stands alone as a strong song. Sonically it reminds me of Daisies while also being way more compelling than it. I liked the intro/outro a lot more when I thought it was Daisy but it's still cute . Also, another bridge!

I love how people keep spamming that gif showing the 34 score on Metacritic like it's some sort of "gotcha" moment for us fans, when in reality we're all vibing to 143 and bonding over our love of Katy. The album could have scored a 10 and it wouldn't change how I feel towards it. In the grand scheme of things, who truly cares what critics or haters have to say about something you love? What a boring way to live life. Now let me go back to bopping to "ALL THE LOVE"

It's honestly hilarious how many gifs are being made just to **** over this album. I can't imagine spending my spare time being so invested in something I supposedly dislike to the point I'm creating gifs in Photoshop.

it's just a basic album like a 3/5 for me.

the critics so far are a little bit too harsh on her

hope this album won't make the next album wait too long...NRO/HIH/CAIL/TE/Tucked are definitely great directions for what 143 should've been. Sth started to get wrong when she thought When I'm Gone is what katycats wanted

They truly think KatyCats of all fanbases care about Metacritic scores  I know some people need the external validation but that's just not us!
