I can sing My all without any problems so I am certain Whitney would have done it in her sleep.

🤦‍♂️

Uhmmm...lol gurl, I don't think you should be talking about anyone's singing at all.

This was Mariah way past her prime singing My all: https://youtu.be/jVbI-rKRAsM?si=Dx1CAokgctoeDPEz

The narrative has changed since Whitney passed (as always happens), but Mariah could do much more with her voice and sang FAR more difficult songs. She not only had the range (connected or overall), b

This fan fiction.    The narrative has never been anything different. Whitney has always been the universal standard.

I am ******* screaming at that vocaroo. There’s no way you weren’t at least giggling while typing that you sang that with no problems

That’s not a better example of IWALY - she got a bit sloppy with pitch and cracked going for an upper belt.

Considering this is well over the 50th live performance overall of “IWALY” during that era alone, if we count the fact that she started the ‘Bodyguard World Tour’ in July 1993 and this was filmed in March 1994 at an awards show, I would say this is easily one of her best live show-casings of the song out there.

Which other contemporary female artist at the time was singing such songs, live, with practically broadway-performance like demand, so consistently (much to her own detriment in the end, unfortunately)? :rip:

Her pitch was great in this performance actually. There were momentary “vocal cracks” during the first verse and chorus, the transitions and overall intonation from chest voice to falsetto weren’t as smooth, but everything else was top tier especially the climax; her voice exploded and her breath support was fantastic.

Tone is subjective though. JHud could easily match her vocally.

There are tons of people out there who could perform her songs with ease.

With ease”?

Unfortunately not.

There are a plethora of non-mainstream gospel singers that could also sing both Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey’s songs “with ease”, particularly from a range-worthy and technical standpoint, however that wouldn’t make their vocal performance necessarily better. The overall vocal artistry wouldn’t be the same and the stylistic elements would be far from similar also.

Jennifer Hudson has the vocal size, weight and range (even moreso) to sing any Whitney Houston song, however she lacks the vocal agility, dexterity, finesse and musicianship that Whitney Houston had to do the songs justice in comparison.

Tori Kelly and Ariana Grande, the latter for which we saw through her multitude of covers from “Emotions” to “Oh Holy Night”, have the vocal range, fluidity and agility to sing any Mariah Carey song however, again, their musicianship isn’t on par (even though they’re both excellent singers).

OT: Two best singers of modern era. The way they had everything from tone to technique to power to musicianship is unmatched. It's quite a miracle these two emerged in a similar timeframe.

Just wanna point out and emphasize that their tones alone are special and appealing, especially Mariah.

Ms. Carey will always be the better artist, and I revere her, but in terms of vocal musicianship, showmanship and performance ability

Whitney Elizabeth Houston.

Period.

:clap3: Wow, what a stunning performance. I really don't think there's anyone better, tbh.

I abstain from voting as they are both my #1 artist of all times (female).

Whitney was my first soulmate artist and the first artist that I ever knew. When Mariah landed in my world with WY (I was only 9 at the time)... the gates of heaven opened for me.

Mariah gets my heart, Whitney gets my soul and together they are me.

Whitney, even if for her tone alone. Mariah comes exceptionally close in a variety of ways, and I wouldn't even blink an eye if someone chose her over Whitney, but Whitney's tone, power and control was just otherworldly.

I’m traumatised by Mariah lip synching, I want to tell her to shut up

OT: Whitney (but Mariah was amazing too [if she ever sang])

I'll say Whitney was the better all-around vocalist/singer due to her vocal endurance even at her lowest. The Voice was still there even in her darkest times.

Mariah can do whistles but at the same time suffered extreme vocal decline due to multiple factors. She shines brighter with her songwriting & producing skills.

At least Whitney never ****** up the new year's eve event that dreadfully. So my pick is Whitney.

I guess you weren't here during her last few years. Everyone was vicious towards Whitney's extreme vocal decline. "Vicious" was an understatement because everyone really came for her.

At least, Mariah recovered and sang again on NYE. Whitney never really redeemed herself, although her legacy did erase many of her very bad last few years.

I think Mariah did better here:

Or this:

Whitney can definitely command the stage better and has better charisma than Mariah, but during her peak, Mariah's vocal skills were superhuman.

Whitney was definitely better live but when you compare studio, Mariah's voice just hits different

There's no doubt Mariah was a great singer, but to me Whitney was much better.  Aretha called her the seventh wonder of the world and she's right.

Honestly I think Whitney’s voice had more range, power, but more importantly was more emotive and had more soul to it (not saying Mariah didn’t, but Whitney is the voice for a reason)

Mariah without doubt is and was the better musician overall though.

Whitney was able to express emotions in a way nobody else could. She wasn't even writing those songs yet she belted out like she was feeling every single note. That's why she's my favorite vocalist of all time!

She had some very underrated tracks from Glitter vocally imo.

This is a very interesting topic for me.

I do believe Whitney had the more powerful and more resonant voice, and I see why someone would pick her. But Mariah did a lot more with her voice, her agility and acrobatics were far more prevalent and personally that does more to my ears.

Let's put it this way, if Mariah covered IWALY it wouldn't be as good as Whitney's, but it would be better than a Whitney cover of My All. If that makes any sense.

At the end of the day, they both offered something unique and I am very grateful for both of their otherworldly voices and contributions to popular music!

This is the perfect response.

Whitney is the standard. She inspired Mariah. That doesn't change the fact that Mariah had more range and versatility with her voice.

Whitney is a performer. She ATE the stage up and controlled it, commanded respect and is a much better LIVE performer than Mariah.

Mariah has a better technical voice. There isn't a note Whitney hit that Mariah can't. There are plenty notes Mariah hit that Whitney could not.

Mariah has admitted that she enjoys the studio more than live performing. She's just not great at it.

Whitney sounds like the rent is past due. Mariah sounds like she's screaming and crying at the same time. While she has a better technical voice Mariah's beautiful voice can be a turn off for some but no one ever is turned off by Whitney's voice. So it's a style thing.

Better live performer - Whitney and it's not even close

Better range- Mariah

Better versatility - Mariah

Better control - Whitney

Better strength and power - Whitney

Better tone -Whitney

Better agility- Mariah

Better timbre -Mariah

Trump card: Better artist (melodies, songwriting, producing, arranging, composing, diverse genres) - Mariah

honestly, it's criminal to compare the vocal trinity against one another because they are the trinity for a reason.
