Whitney Houston’s technique was absolutely supreme also and I think it’s extremely unfair and incorrect for you to say that Carey alone had better musical awareness.

Houston’s voice was even throughout all of her vocal registers however, given her fach and type of voice, of course she displayed more virtuosity in her middle voice.

- Her voice was larger in both size and weight to Carey’s so of course Houston’s voice wasn’t going to be as naturally agile; nevertheless, where Carey was able to execute more complex coloratura, Houston’s melisma was just as potent, if not more soulful, given her Gospel background and being raised within that format of singing.

Houston was a Spinto-Soprano in her prime whose voice darkened into that of a Middleweight Mezzo-Soprano in her later years. Carey was a Light-Lyric Soprano with a Whistle Register extension. It’s apples and oranges and is like comparing Maria Callas to Joan Sutherland.

- Houston’s head voice was a phenomenon of its own and, to this day, her ability to use it remains one of the most masterful in contemporary music.

Houston’s concept of vocal dynamics were also brilliant given the fact that she could sing just as easy and sound just as clear and even when singing in Piano and do just the same when singing in Forte.

How can you listen to this performance, especially the last two minutes and tell me that Houston was just good at “changing the tempo”?

This performance too.

The woman was simply a titan on stage and her sheer vocal confidence was a sight to behold alongside her great technique and instinctive ability to bring a song to life.

She was a vocal chameleon who never sang a song the same way twice and her improvisational skills were great. That is LITERALLY the definition of somebody having great musical awareness and musicianship, contrary to your comment.

I lost my long reply with the atrl error, but in short - I said Whitney was also masterful at musicianship, just that Mariah took it much further. Whitney often liked to play with tempo - not that it's all she did. I've already discussed the nuances of Mariah's improvisation and musicianship skills. She not only constantly improvised, but was able to blend complex melisma and specific timbre to melodies and songs in a mindblowing manner.

To say that Mariah's technicality was inferior is a bit silly, sis. I recommend this full vid - he does a fantastic job breaking down their respective technical awareness and explains in detail why Mariah was superior in that regard (and he's a Whitney stan, btw).

The narrative has changed since Whitney passed (as always happens), but Mariah could do much more with her voice and sang FAR more difficult songs. She not only had the range (connected or overall), b

I am ******* screaming at that vocaroo. There’s no way you weren’t at least giggling while typing that you sang that with no problems

Mariah's songs are FAR more difficult - that's not even debatable. Mariah even gave one of her best performances of Without You in the Rainbow era - her weakest vocal era of the first 15 years. That style of singing is very easy for her - yes, she easily sang those type of songs. Hero is another example. She had to make it more complicated live after getting bored singing it :deadbanana4:

Yeah, and look at the votes for Whitney. Madonna fans, JLo fans, and Mariah antis. Literally almost every vote. :deadbanana4:

The only parts of that Without you that are live are the verses with sometimes one more live line at the end for effect. ( She performed it like this from Rainbow era for the rest of her career) The rest is all lipped. She used the same track for every performance on that tour.

And you trying to invalidate everyones opinion because they don't suit your narrative is very telling.

All Mariah's votes are hardcore lambs. Go figure.

Also Whitney changed up her songs every night, mostly completely reinventing them compared to the studio version.

Mariah added one belt to hero. WOW.

That entire performance is live - she sang the entire thing live in Milan and other Rainbow tour performances have different inflections and are not nearly as good as this one. Don't be delusional.

And look at the list of voters yourself :rip:

No, its not. At least 50 percent of that Rainbow tour was lipped. Please just stop.

I was being facetious. You think I'm dumb enough to fall for this bait?

So you can't sing. Thanks for confirming.

Without You was live for the entire tour and was different each stop - completely different inflections, changing the melody, and dodging some belts in other performances. She even cut the song from the set list when her voice wasn't holding up on the tour (only sang it at FIVE shows). This is not debatable and you CLEARLY don't know what you're talking about.

Suburban nature hates Whitney. In an earlier post he wrote that Whitney's only plus was her power which wasnt really important seeing as Mariah had more range or something like that. He is not capable of being objective.  The "tempo" comment was particularly heinous and very dismissive of the greatest vocalist the world has ever seen..

This alone:

Stan wars aside, just a few of Whitney's greatest performances. Like Mariah said herself, she was born to sing.

So which is it?

So a song that was claimed to be "easy" for Mariah to sing had to be cut from the show after one decent performance of it after the rest not being up to par.

Yet Whitney sung IWALY flawlessly 144 times on one tour alone.

Exactly. She managed one performance ( which was very underwhelming compared to studio) before struggling on subsequent dates before cutting the song.

Yet we are supposed to believe it was "easy" .

( I guess the nodules excuse will be the next thing trotted out)

Both of these ladies are two of the most talented vocalists ever known.

Literally once in a lifetime talents.

Disgusting comment.

People downplaying Mariah's vocal talent in here.

Both. Mariah’s voice completely gave out by the end of Rainbow Tour. That was possibly her worst vocal era until recently. She couldn’t even belt after the third or fourth show.

She was back to singing Without You fully live on Charmbracelet Tour and devouring it every night. The song was very easy for her in healthy voice.

It’s really quite commonly known that Mariah’s songs are far more complex. She can sing these other vocalist songs only requiring mid belts and minimal melisma in here sleep - hence why every time she covered a song she made it her song.

THAT VOCAROO :bibliahh:

OT: Whitney. But both are legendary vocalists  and I largely prefer Mariah's music

I quite literally stan Whitney and she’s one of my top played artists on Last.fm. You’re just out of your depth in a vocal discussion - as evidenced by your inaccurate claims throughout this thread. Claiming live performances were lipped, complex songs were easy - then backtracking on both - not understanding pedagogy.

And for you to mention objectivity when your account is literally only dedicated to trolling and baiting is…wild. I don’t know why I even bother.
