Is Sampling Out Of Control?

Featured Replies

Question is in the Title. After 2022 & 2023, it's undeniable that sampling is the most prevalent shadow over rap and pop right now.
I think it's interesting we've reached a parallel between pop culture nostalgia and music. But honestly it feels like music as a whole is losing inspiration. Where do we think music will go from here? Doomsday 1:30 TikTok songs all around? Or something else

People have been sampling for decades, but at least in the past they did something original/interesting with the samples, nowadays it's just a copy-paste situation.

Rap has always been sample heavy. Back in the 90s you had entire albums now considered classics almost entirely made up of songs with samples.

But yes, it’s prevalence in pop right now seems to lend itself to the idea that we are in a “stuck culture” and making new music is no longer profitable, thus new artists sample and catalogs sell for hundreds of millions. It will likely only become more prevalent as record companies try to find new ways (formats?) to monetize music.

No. It was worse in the 90s and early 00s.

I thought it was but when you look back at songs throughout the decades, so many of them have samples.

No. They know they can't beat the classics :gaycat2:

They need to sample Samantha Mumba's classics next

No

What is out of control is artists thinking the sun rises from the asses and everyone copies them

People have been sampling since the 80s and 90s.  This is not new

People have been sampling for decades, but at least in the past they did something original/interesting with the samples, nowadays it's just a copy-paste situation.

It’s not the sampling in itself that’s the issue, it’s that people are using it very lazily.

Good use of samples would be Hung Up and My Head & My Heart (Ava Max),

but then you have people like Bebe releasing some really lazy work and this seem to be happening an awful lot at the moment

If sampling and interpolation is “out of control,” it’s not songwriters/artists/producers’ faults. Basically, the copyrights to many manyyy many old hits belong to large conglomerate holding companies, almost entirely the SAME slate of companies that own the major labels.

These business–which often directly or indirectly control what music is released by almost every major artist–have realized that all these old copyrights they own, which are doing steady legacy numbers, can be totally financially revitalized by a hit song that samples or interpolates their existing catalog.

These companies have told working songwriters and producers–again, often songwriters and producers who are already under contract for these very same companies–in no uncertain terms that they are looking for new records that sample/interpolate their existing catalog and that they are prioritizing getting cuts (releases) with these songs.

so, the answer is capitalism.

I like when sampling is interpolated into beats, but its so lazy when the whole song is the sample

This, sampling is fine and can work amazingly still (see: Renaissance) but some songs coming out lately are so sample heavy that it might as well be a cover.

Sampling is an inherent aspect of music. I think what we’ve been currently seeing is pop artists trying to gain radio/streaming/general hits off samples instead of coming up with something original.

I think a lot of samples are more sloppily done now and that’s what makes the difference. Mariah sampled a couple different times for her big hits in the 90s and they always felt fresh, I wish the pop girlies were doing it like that now.

Never heard this before. The song is fire!

bebe rexha and david guetta have be the biggest music criminals when it comes to re-using old music to smash because no one cares about their original work

It was different. Back then people actually built their own melodies around samples... Right now you see Lazid Guetta sampling every dance classic from the 90's changing just the verses 💀

No, they’re just sampling the same songs over and over now. Look at Nicki. Her career is held up by samples now

We want ACBTYL first :bird:

it’s more so when the sample is uninspired and just used for nostalgic purposes rather recreating it into something new

I don't know..but I do think it's kind of funny that David Guetta sampled himself :rip:

It’s mostly to avoid lawsuits and save time.

Also coming up with original melodies is a skill that 90% of current artists are incapable of doing

Imo we should just consider artists who do original music/melodies a lot more talented and superior than the rest(when the music is good).
