It’s no secret this board has been around for ages! And despite claims that this forum is dead, whenever anything major happens (Lizzo’s cancellation party, Taylor’s tour domination, Doja Cat’s fumes) the users come out of hiding to discuss and kiii.

 

ATRL has survived when a lot of other forums shut down or became true graveyards in the social media/Reddit age.
 

How has ATRL managed to stand the test of time and hold on to its status as the staple pop music forum of our lifetime? Discuss!

I have no clue how ATRL has survived especially with the years of closed registrations, site instability, and now with the amount of ads plastered everywhere. 

The O_Hs keep the site traffic up by consistently talking about people they claim to despise.

I think the closed registrations may have worked in their favor creating exclusivity and making people more eager to join.

But that’s the fun of ATRL. It would be a boring place in the world if people only gave thought to things they like.

If you registered for or even know what ATRL is you're already extremely invested in pop music. It's a magnet for passionate people and you can almost guarantee you'll find good conversation about anything relating to the pop girlies here. The mix of bases helps a lot.

 

Also the team of very dedicated people trying to keep this ship sailing.

But I also think that this site having such a specific culture (even outside of pop culture topics) combined with a lot of users on here establishing years-long friendships with each other plays a big role in why it's stuck around for so long and why it will continue to do so.

Oh I agree. The ATRL experience isn't common on many other places on the internet (especially since Musk crashed Twitter). I'm just saying that as long as there's stan wars/stans and obsessed haters, ATRL will continue to exist.

The community is the heart of our popularity. We really made it through the dark years (2016 - 2022) on the sheer strength of the members. Thankfully we are now in a place where for the first time in years, there is no server or software problem. Now we can focus on the features that members want and find ways to expand our brand. And none of that would be possible if it wasn't for the members being patient as Lee and I got acclimated to our roles as admins + the ads funding our ability to hire developers to fix what was needed.

The excessive ads lowkey saved this place but also made it really disruptive in a way

ATRL is all things pop culture whereas the other forums are mainly focused on one artist. 

There's nowhere else to go to talk about such a wide range of pop culture topics and music.

I don't really have a problem with the ads. Granted, I use Adblocker on my laptop so it's not an issue there, but I use ATRL Mobile just as much if not more and although they are excessive at times I'm used to them and they are easy to ignore.

Honestly there's no other place that serves the same mix of chart tracking (including messy stan fights, throwing around stats), actual music discussion and general horniness

Its best days are definitely behind it but so are all of ours Can't help but feel I'll always be around here
