Features that saved someone's career

I highly doubt that, since she had 4 top 10 hits in the US before Umbrella. But perhaps it's true because her albums weren't selling. Can you provide the source for that?

Rih, L.A. Reid, and multiple people from the label already intimated that she was about to be dropped mostly because in those days, especially for Black women, resources only seemingly went to one artist. That's why Tierra Marie got the high quality producers, high budget videos, magazine covers with Jay, several televised performances for her debut while Rih didn't get that and had no televised performances despite Pon de Replay being a big hit. While I don't think they were going to drop her after she had scored a number one and two more top tens after AGLM on top of being Billboard's Female Artist of The Year 2006, her position was never really secure there. But even after Umbrella she still had to pay for music videos and push for singles (and even self-finance a whole tour which her accountants claim to be among the main reasons she nearly went bankrupt in 2009/2010). I think it's mostly DefJam being a horrible label than anything else.

She was almost dropped by her label in 2006, right?

Maybe in late 2005, but certainly not after the success of A Girl Like Me with SOS & Unfaithful. She was crowned Top Female Artist of 2006 by Billboard.

Jay-Z also wasn't the reason Umbrella smashed this hard.

Ask anyone about Britney Spears and let’s see who brings up the music in any shape or meaning lmao

Actually that's one of the first things the average person would bring up, her classic pop hits that people grew up with and are still played and culturally referenced to this day.

Britney would need it more, honey.

Maybe she can one day catch up Xtina's networth. The good sis can buy MULTIPLE BritneyS and still remain a multimillionaire.

Using her wealth being stolen by her abusers as a gotcha for a stan argument. Perfectly fitting for the kind of person who dedicates their account to a serial killer who raped and murdered children.

This was actually a good topic for a thread but got lost in a weird stan war…

some examples from the top of my head:

- J Cole bringing TLC for crooked teeth gave them newfound attention after laying low with the “3D” album in the mid-2000s and so many false starts for a comeback

- Keyshia Cole brought Monica for Trust in 2009 and that anticipated Monica’s success with the Everything to Me era in 2010. She was flopping before that became a hit

- The Diddy - Dirty Money album helped Dawn Richard get back to the spotlight and set the tone for her solo career after Danity Kane

- The Kids See Ghost album renewed Kid Cudi’s career

- Elton John is obviously a legend but rerecording his old material with big names from today or nostalgia is bringing him numbers again

I appreciate you following the spirit of the topic :) I was naive to think this would become anything more thoughtful than "GAgA fLOp wItHOUT bRAdLEy"

That's a horrible way of working with artists. Why sign an artist if you don't fully believe in their potential?

I'm glad she managed to become an established artist, the world wouldn't be same without Rih's music.

Bradley saving Gaga’s career, music and acting. I used to like him too :ducky:

Taylor saved the other artist on "IDWLF" from being the one hit wonder.

i would say Scream & Shout or other Brittany's feats but they certainly didn't save her career :deadbanana4:

Yet Your Body peaked at #34 and Lotus peaked at #7 with 74,000. sales in 2012

dont be mad at me, I’m one of the few people who actually bought Lotus. But x’s few seconds in MLJ did nothing for her own career.

And 6 years later she opened with 68k.

You do realize that Xtina has sold more albums than Britney in the 2010s, right? :gaycat2:

Female Fatale - 1680k

Britney Jean - 640k

Glory - 395k

= 2715k

vs

Bionic - 750k

Burlesque - 1375k

Lotus - 550k

Liberation - 200k

= 2875k

Moves Like Jager alone outsold all singles from Britney's 2010s combined.

Weeks on Billboard 200

Burlesque = 53 weeks

FF + BJ + Glory = 52 weeks

Halsey was kind of destined to be a cult indie act until Closer happened.

See You Again for Charlie Puth.

Maren Morris and the Middle. Otherwise the Bones wouldn't have crossed over.

Session 53. Not that she was suffering, but none of the previous droplets hit as hard. With Brzp popularity and dissing Piqué, she redeemed herself as an artist, beyond a hitmaker. She's maintaining the momentum with TQG, but we need her to delivery a quality album over more accompanied singles.

All of these top 10 that you're bragging about are either frontloaded/have mediocre sales (HIAM, S&M Remix, I Wanna Go, Hold Me Closer). None of these were solid hits, aside from, MAYBE, Till The World Ends.

So that's what I claimed first. Britney's last smash hit was due to a FEATURING.

Her residency grossed $137.7 million from 248 dates in 4 years. It is absolutely absurd to think it a success, ESPECIALLY comparing it to one of my fav's residency: Enigma by Gaga that brought up $80M from ONLY 50 shows.

Hold Me Close's streams are still lagging, bestie :

Spotify:

Hold Me Closer - 237,031,017 :rip:

First of all, HIAM was the only frontloaded hit. TTWE and IWG were organic hits. And this absolutely negates your claims that her career needed saving. She came off of two successful eras. If we do the math, she was primarily the reason for Scream and Shout's success. will.i.am NEVER touched the top 10 as a lead artist before or after Scream and Shout. Whereas, S&S became Britney's 13th top 10 hit EASILY. Not even Justin Bieber, who was a bigger artist than Britney in 2012, could help will score another Top 10 hit.

Second of all, Piece of Me is the fourth highest-grossing Residency of all time and is regarded as the start of the shift in Vegas' demographics.

Third, Britney was the highest paid woman in music in 2012. This is apparently the year you said her career needed "saving".

Lastly, a top 10 is a top 10. A top 10 after 6 years without releasing music and despite all the legal drama.

Better luck next time.

People are interested in Britney Spears, sorry. Can’t say the same about the music of Christina Aguilera
