her career is just very mismanaged and kinda all over the place, sucks that the album is flopping because it's not as bad as some of y'all are making it out to be, it's not great either but still

Sadly there isn’t much room for another black superstar. Doja and SZA are enough for the GP

 

It was the same back in the 2010s which is very unfortunate because there are so many black artists out there who make amazing music but just don’t get that type of recognition

I’m a very casual listener and I love r&b

 

but almost every single time I’ve heard one of her songs or watched a video,  my only thoughts are “well this isn’t it. “

She went overboard with the sexual image. Like it’s not subtle but aggressively in your face. To the point that it seems forced and not natural. This may have alienated her. 

Her image is the biggest problem.

I feel like most people would be willing to look past it if she wasn't trying way too hard. It's blatantly inauthentic and it shows a lack of identity.

She's too busy being a hypersexual Beyonce wannabe when that type of image doesn't suit her and doesn't seem believable from her. It wasn't a gradual change either like Rihanna from AGLM > GGGB or Bey from Destiny's Child > DIL, she did a complete 180 overnight.

In the lead-up to the album release, her image hasn't been consistent. One minute she's borderline a nun with the Pray It Away video, then she's taking backshots on TV, then she's a porcelain doll in the album cover while simultaneously wearing dominatrix clothing for the outtakes. 

It's all over the place.

 

A part of me thinks that Chloe feels that this is what she has to do in order to gain attention. Black female artists get called "boring" unless they take off their clothes. It's sad.

 

 

The music has been subpar.

We've seen what she's capable of with her sister. She can amazingly sing, she can produce and she can write. Yet it seems as if the songwriting skills left the room once she went solo.

Have Mercy was a bop, but the video was a misfire. That VMA performance of it was a misfire. The godawful Treat Me was a misfire. 

Doubling down on selling sex has affected the music.

 

While the Chris collab wasn't sonically interesting, so many other female artists have worked with him and didn't receive half the backlash Chloe got. There's some hypocrisy there.

 

 

Her team or label have given her too much control and they haven't been doing enough on their part.

Why were the previous singles including her biggest hit scrapped from the album tracklist? What label would co-sign that when without Have Mercy or Treat Me, the album would flop? It seems like a decision made by Chloe herself.

The label have been throwing out all sorts of singles without any direction or any sort of attempt to actually promote them. Cheat Back should've had a female feature, her listeners are largely women and gay men and that's what many would want from her. 

Cater to them instead of trying to chase after straight men's attention, work with more females in the industry as a way to tap in to their fanbases.

 

You have young Black female songwriters like Nija, Diana Gordon and Starrah etc who could've all helped her come up with decent material.

 

 

 

This may be unpopular, but in Chloe's case, I don't think being a Black woman is what's holding her back from smashing. She has had a lot of industry push and promotion mainly because of her proximity to Bey that other Black female artists today haven't received. 

She's also lighter brown. Her image is one of the main problems.

Listen to In Pieces and Ungodly Hour back to back, you can easily tell which record is superior and which one failed terribly to be either on trend or be a quality piece.

There are some points you have made, I fear

The music is too dated and her image is too cringe.
 

There’s nothing wrong with being super sexual: Cardi and Megan excel at it. The issue is that Chloe comes off like a pastor’s kid who was sheltered her whole life, got to college, and immediately made sex her personality. 
 

Chloe also seems super motivated to “prove” herself by producing everything, writing everything, and giving 110% into every vocal performance or opportunity, but that doesn’t mean anything if the music is bad. Sometimes artistic freedom is more of a hindrance than a help. Sometimes you need to be told to go back to the drawing board.

she lost the cxh hype after she started being labeled as corny with the way she leaned into the sex symbol image and the theatrics during her performances 

 

i really think if she had started off with the r&b crossovers like i don’t mind/feel me cry/looze you or just any of the songs that focus more on the vocal layering and production, people would understand her vibe more
