Chlöe - What Has Gone Wrong?

Featured Replies

Coming off one of the most interesting R&B debuts this decade, going through commercial slumps thereafter to going straight downhill with the release of her highly anticipated new album. What has gone wrong? Discuss.

Cheatback is so memorable that people listened to it once and don't need to stream it again, it's that powerful :jonny5::jonny5:

The music isn't connecting with the GP or the critics and her image, there you have it.

I think she’s trying to cater to a certain demographic of R&B listeners and it never felt natural, for me at least.

I know it’s redundant to constantly be bringing up CxH when discussing her solo music, but I’m genuinely confused about how drastically different the music is in terms of quality.

going solo it seems.

but shes still lightyears ahead of normani so i'll accept it

some of the wrongs:

- Treat Me is a good bop, but a second single was when Chloe should’ve shown a different side of her instead of a HM redux. If she had Surprise done by then she should’ve dropped that, maybe with a Janet circa-janet. inspired sensual video.

- Less is more. Her social media antics catered too much to the male gaze and they don’t stream her music. They just wanna see her body. Chloe should’ve been smarter in portraying her sensuality without alienating her older fan base from CxH like not posting that lollipop video;

- Some of her collaborations were a turn off. Latto was not needed in For the Night. Her fans wanted a solo version since the beginning. Then the Chris Brown song happened and her team blocked fans on her discord with contrarian opinions, adding to the backlash on other social media. Having Future on your only radio ready song in, with a lazy verse, just shows that she’s tryin to pull that toxic male audience to her music, when she should be focusing on female listeners. Having a female rapper with strong hype would’ve done wonders for the song as a revenge girl power song;

- The whole aesthetics for the album was off. The generic hood love narratives that people just don’t buy coming from her, the gloomy dominatrix imagery, the atrocious cover. Chloe in denim, speaking from her bougie experience without generic references, more elegant 2000s and boho styles would’ve been better received;

- She should’ve produced more, since her own productions are better than what was given to her, but I guess baby girl wanted to try different lanes with hot producers for her solo endeavors. Still her own work eats what they passed to her. It was givin writing camp leftovers.

She can still overcome this with a new CxH chapter and a better planned sophomore effort

She came guns blazing trying to be a sex pot. That ended her career right there.

Why is there any confusion about this?

Nobody knows her, it's really that simple.

Her two albums with her sister weren't particularly popular.

ChloexHalle had zero hits.

Solo Chloe has no hits.

She hasn't exactly done much to build a profile as an artist, so outside of people on Twitter, who exactly was anticipating the album?

Karma came back to bite for working with an abuser

 But not quite the abuser himself. Women shouldn't be punished for men's mess. Especially incidents that transpired when they were minors.

The R&B female market is overcrowded and highly splintered with about 20 different aesthetic lanes and marketing choices possible.

She didn’t pick one but several and then alienated a lot of people really early with her raunchy image 180 from her second album with Halle and then the Chris Brown feature.

If the music was incredible it’d speak for itself and she’d be able to express herself however she wants but the material is mostly subpar when compared to the hype.

It just feels sad and like it’s all happened really quickly.

Don’t know how many times this reminder needs to come back, but Chris Brown never learned from his past mistakes as a minor, and if anything it could be argued he got worse. It’d be one thing if it was a one-off. It wasn’t.

She is black. Thats it. Sadly, America is racist af and everybody knows it.

i think the first mistake was when she waited months to drop have mercy

the song had everything to smash

She is corny. The fake sexy image is not translating and is off-putting. Songs are too generic as well. Thats why she, normani, saweetie, latto etc are struggling. It boils down to inauthentic image and songs. Also the field is over-saturated, so people are going to focus on the SZa's, summers etc before chloe who has no artistic identity.

The Album is mid and she's being pulled in every direction/doesn't really stick to one theme.

Women who support the career of a man who abused multiple other women should be held accountable for doing so.

Chris abused women who came after Rihanna too, when he was not a minor. Not that being a minor excuses what he did anyways.

picking the Chris Brown song instead of Have Mercy I fear

Have Mercy's recurrent streams aren't good & the song is old, it wouldn't have saved the 1st week  (it still should be on the album, wierd that it's not)

When Treat Me flopped it was obvious that nothing else would stick
