Do you think there’s a difference between queerbaiting when society was more homophobic versus now that it is (somewhat) more accepted/popular and likely to result in financial gain rather than just controversy?

 

Wikipedia defines queerbaiting as:

Well, I'm not even sure if that definition is what people think of anymore. I think people mostly see queerbaiting as appropriating / benefiting from traditionally queer style or "culture" but without having to endure the corresponding queerphobia. The problem with this is the ultimate goal should be for everyone to express themselves however they want to, and that queers don't necessarily own a particular image or style, anyway.

 

I'm not sure anyone on the list above fits the definition of a queerbaiter. Most are really obvious allies. I find it annoying --- personally, so don't @ me --- when I see younger actors or Tiktokers say things like "I don't label myself", but they get full support from queer stylists, producers, etc, and then totally ditch their previous image when they've made it to the mainstream, if that makes sense. It doesn't happen that often but it irks me. It's just interesting how even with the younger generation of musicians and actors, there's actually really few that are out and queer, and the ones who are may be bullied into doing so (Kit Conner, for eg).

Conan Gray? Sis he's an opposite of a queerbaiter. They're like if someone is assumed queer by most people, and even possibly is, but has angrily lashed out at anyone assuming they're LGBT.

I don't think the MTV Kiss or IKAG were "queerbaiting", they were both for shock value.

it's always funny to me how (what I assume would be mostly Americans and western Europeans) people here describe queerbaiting as something that basically is profiting out of something trendy and current to gain more success when in reality most of the world is still homophobic and using queer imagery in any sort of way is actually limiting those artists success

 

If you take a look at Harry Styles who is the most dragged person here when it comes to this topic, if he actually had a basic white straight dude aesthetic instead of his current one trust me he would be even more popular

 

Also, its not like atrl supports queer artists being queer, Sam Smith is atrl's 2nd biggest punching bag after Demi Lovato no matter what the topic about them is
