So we all know about Nicki Minaj's predilection for abusers. From long time collaborators such as Dr Luke, Tekashi 6ix9ine and Chris Brown to her husband Kenneth Petty. But have you ever stopped to wonder why she frequently associates herself with such repugnant individuals?

 

Well I'm sure some of you will be familiar with the concept of the "cycle of abuse". For those who don't know, this is when those raised in an abusive environment go on to perpetuate those behaviours into adulthood. Well Nicki Minaj's father was a drug addict and alcoholic who burnt down their family home and we all know her brother Jelani is a convicted rapist. 

 

Perhaps Nicki Minaj's early interactions with men have shaped her opinion of what a relationship should look like and how a man should behave. Because of this she is quicker to dismiss or excuse problematic behaviours than you or me.

 

Do you think we should be more sympathetic towards her situation?

-The cycle of abuse is largely pop psychology. Not many studies support it, if at all. 

 

-The men in her life are disgusting and she does deserve some empathy for it, sure, but she herself is genuinely an awful person - trying to lie about the race of her husband's victim to then weaponize the painful history of white women wielding the full might of the judicial system against men of colour is disgusting. 

 

-She usually only thinks of herself as a victim when she loses (many!) awards.

It absolutely is not pop psychology. People who are abused as children have a far higher likelihood of becoming abusers, AND of being abused as adults.

 

However, Nicki is an adult and she is responsible for seeking help if she needs it to break this cycle. Her continued enabling of abusers around her and even going as far as to threaten and intimidate abuse victims on her husband's behalf... inexcusable regardless of her childhood.

Yes, being raised in an abusive environment probably shaped who she is today (no one is just born a bad person) but once someone becomes an adult and doesnt seek help then you have to hold them accountable
