I've had people start exactly like you did, noting features that are "distinct" to ultimately a region I am not from.

You may have not meant harm, but the way you did it was very...unsavoury, to put it mildly, and the block makes sense. Take it from someone who gets a lot of "oh, you don't look like [my nationality]" from a lot of people in different — arguably more benign — contexts: it's weird because there is no real way to respond, and, as others have pointed out, inevitably a lot of our ideas on what nationalities look "like" are informed by cultural or media-borne stereotypes. Like sometimes I just say "oh, I get that a lot," and jdjdj it feels weird all times. I used to go "oh, where did you think I was from?" as a means to try and deflate that line of conversation but this usually set the stereotyping furnace to full blast instead And I guess I don't understand the purpose of these remarks. Am I supposed to...take it as a compliment? Play into it? Etc. I think a good rule going forward is to wait for the person to bring it up of their own volition, following which you can banter on that topic. If they don't bring it up, well, there's your answer.
