Latto just teased another Pop track.  Do you think it’ll backfire in the long run? 
 

Nicki crossed over to Pop, and people had a lot to say about it.  Still do.  IMO, she got bullied back into doing street records.  I’m guessing because she had a Rap fanbase first + they felt like she abandoned them.  Personally I think you can do both.  
 

Y’all think Latto can pull off multiple Pop hits? And still maintain street cred? 
 

My thoughts: On one hand, she don’t really have a solid audience yet…so she’ll be fine.  But on the other hand, it might come across inauthentic if she relies solely on Pop to get hits.  

Thoughts? 
 

 

Ppl dont really take Latto as seriously as a rapper compared to Nicki so doubt it

After being exposed by Nicki for using ghost writers and reference tracks I think a pop transition would be the smarter thing to do

People do take her seriously as a rapper because the majority of her discography is rap until as of recently  Nicki released a whole damn pop album 

Too early to tell what will happen. BE is the only thing she's ever released that's been successful, all the other singles and album flopped, so we'll see.

Nicki still has a great longevity and countless non pop hits songs. That’s not the same lol.

Literally this, and opened the doors for her to work with a ton of other artists by hopping on remixes, etc... 

 

In regards to the title, she just had a #1 rap/pop single on the Hot 100 that peaked with 60M radio audience...I still don't understand how saying if Latto will get "Nicki'ed" is an insult?

For starters, most rappers aren’t noticed by the GP/YT people til they hop on a pop song so…

 

Secondly, Nicki is flexible in both pop and hip hop sounds + been in the industry longer. Whereas Latto’s recent succcess has been off one pop leaning track. Queen of da Souf is better than anything thats on 777 btw.

People forget the fact Nicki, Missy, Lil Kim, Foxy, etc. are the reasons why these new girls can release full rap project. 
 

cause 10-20+ years ago the only way female rapper saw success was rapping on a pop or R&B beat. 

Latto is a fad so no she will not.

I like both but let's not compare Latto pre-Big Energy to Nicki pre-Super Bass. Like lol. It's not even a comparison.

Her first and only hit is a pop song carried by Mariah's sample. Of course she's going to do more pop songs. I didn't know that relying on ghostwritters and reference tracks gives you a "street cred" either.

No. People just don’t care enough about this girl, and after Nicki broke down pop barriers & copped all the heat, it’s become much more acceptable to cross over. It’s a very different time now.

Latto is a one hit wonder, Nicki had hits even before she went pop. They aren’t comparable.

Possibly.  
 

It works for Doja, b/c I honestly believe she has eclectic taste in music. Pop just seems more natural for her.  

 

But none of the other rap girls can’t seem to pull off Pop as well.  At least not to the degree as Nicki and Doja.   
 

idk if I believe Pop from Latto, if I’m being honest.  Feels like a business opportunity to me.  It’s hard to explain.  
 

Like I’m all for her growing and establishing herself…but something about it feels disjointed + disingenuous a bit.  Even though she sounds good doing it.

This.  It might give her disjointed audience like Nicki had/has.   
 

The only difference is that Nicki was able to breakthrough big + she had the Young Money association which gave her an identity planted in Hip-hop culture out the gate.  
 

It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out.

In BE the best part was the Mariah sample. And what we’ve heard of Lottery, isn’t even her vocal. She has quite a monotonous & characterless delivery to her verses that I don’t think is particularly suited for pop at all. She doesn’t have the range. 
 

It feels “disingenuous” because it’s a ditch effort after none of her rap tracks, nor album made any noise, bar the 1 or 2 shady lines that got Twitter Barbz & Spice Cabinets riled up. But no one is actually buying. No one is actually streaming and you can’t pay bills, or your label, with tweets.

I meant in terms of people turning on her for doing Pop.  Not meant to be an insult.

 

I still feel like Nicki was unfairly “punished” for going Pop.  People literally still discredit her as a rapper because of it.  “all her hits are Pop….!!!!” Etc

If someone said Latto was going Pop before “BE” I literally couldn’t have even imagined.  
 

So…from that perspective, she ‘sold it’ good enough for me.  Better than I thought she would have.  Lol. 

most already forget muwop and BFDS, sunshine it's giving wheelin and all those feats also flop hard.

 

even BE is bigger than her, low key disrespectful to nicki like comparing BE to superbass when nicki had secured smash after smash after that,she is one hit wonder so far.
