Back in November 2021, the UK songstress remarked that Ed Sheeran should be scared about the release of her upcoming album being around the same time as 'Equals'.

This is still a true statement though. She was right.

In the same month, she also boldly asserted that her and Drake are a dying breed in the music industry, adding that "there will never be that many of us again at the top doing it the way we were doing it."

This is also an objectively true statement. She is right.

She was overconfident in that she went fishing after releasing. With hype like Adele's, capitalizing on it can make it even bigger. She felt way more present for the 25 rollout, and Hello was arguably a bigger hit. She was very much a dinner table conversation at the time, too, whereas I feel for 30, she was far more on the D/L. I mean, the 30 ads all over the world didn't really have her name on them, only the fans really knew those were for Adele. The GP probably needed to be more informed of her return. If you weren't paying attention at all, you might think all she dropped was Easy on Me and disappeared. Plus, the Vegas debacle was an awful mistep.

She had a much publicized Oprah interview + concert which felt way more ubiquitous than those random late night show appearances during 25

Maybe the karaoke carpool thing came close but that went viral on its own

As a celebrity she was more up and about during the 30 era too, she literally went viral just for puckering up her lips at a basketball game :skull:

Not to mention she has a new music video coming apparently

The demand was clearly there, but the music didn't live up to the hype.

To be fair, CD’s are borderline Obsolete now. Only Taylor and BTS fandom can still make a major profit off of them. Nobody is going to record stores to buy CD’s in 2022? most cars and Laptops can’t even use CD’s anymore. So as far as actual physicals, I think this is the last year we will see them.

but anyone that thinks Adele isn’t in demand is delusional. Even with a forgotten album, 30 was still one of the biggest albums of this decade. She is still a main contender. 30 is just meh

Idk, but she burnt a lot of her goodwill during this era for all her cancelling antics. While all other artists are reaping mass profits from touring after the pandemic freeze, she's completely MIA.

She is no longer in the privilege position of 21 going to 25 anymore where she can just drop anything and people would just buy it up. Adele is now back to be an artist who actually needs hits to sell her album/tour now.

Well, the oposites kinda happened. Ed managed to outstream and out-longevity her in their own main market, while Bad Bunny kinda took over in both streaming and touring.

They are not that elusive "dying breed" anymore, they actually got replaced.

Honestly, everything was going great until the Vegas debacle. It caused nothing but bad press that she waited until 24 hours to cancel her show.

The public will still adore her, but she’s not got them gripping onto everything she does. Which Taylor still has.

The moment Taylor felt this coming she stepped away with Rep. Let people miss her.

Adele sadly pushed through and it’s caused a backfire. Going on Graham Norton acting like it was no big deal just cemented her mistake.

I love Adele, but that Vegas show has caused a massive decline she probably won’t ever recover from.

This. EOM did a massive 19M streams first day. But, the song didn't live up to the hype. Between its release and the album, the hype for an Adele comeback got cut in half.

That being said, I do think that if she had pulled a Taylor and teased an album but with no lead single, she could've done bigger numbers. I strongly doubt she comes close to midnights 185M, especially with a mere 12 tracks, but probably +80M :celestial5:

It did live up to the hype. One of her longest charting Billboard tracks.

Haven't you heard? 30 is no longer charting in most markets and Adele just broke her 2 MVs per era tradition since 19. She actually has to do promo for her 4th single after 11 months pass album release date now.

you made it seem like she has no classics to back it up. I'm referring to her tour.

Ed has had more longevity, but the interview is really talking about release time. 30 definitely overshadowed Equals during Q4 2021. There are plenty of artists whose albums had more longevity than 30 as a whole, but they would still be foolish to release at the same time as 30. They would never go number one.

As for the part about “dying breed”, Adele is talking about mega stars who existed before streaming; there will never be more of them. Bad Bunny has always existed in streaming. Here is the actual part of the interview in context:

This is even more ridiculous because Drake's entire blow up was due to his streaming numbers. He's the first early adopter to the streaming climate with how many songs his albums and mixtapes can be + how savvy he is with streaming platforms. He practially wrote the playbook for streaming artists.

The quality in her music dropped significantly and she became a very safe and one dimensional artists, maybe she always was but it became more evident during the 30 era. Nothing exciting or innovating about Adele in 2022.

Yes she thought she was Taylor

I prefer Taylor of the two, but she doesn't have any eras even close to the size of 21 and 25. She has so many more albums, but much smaller averages.

Views sold 852,000 pure sales copes in 2016 and he sold north of 500,000 pure sales first week multiple times before that. He was huge before streaming. He existed in both pure sales and streaming. As did Taylor Swift. It’s stupid to talk about this though because…

The conversation isn’t even about streaming vs. pure sales in reality. It’s about the inner workings of the music industry during pure sales vs. the industry during streaming and social media. Social Media and streaming have completely changed what a famous artist (or celebrity in general is).

Previously, artists were remote and had a more fabricated public existence (which clearly Adele prefers), you didn’t know anything about them except what the record labels told you about them. Today, it is completely different. The idea of the traditional “celebrity” is almost completely gone. That’s the “dying breed” she is referring to. There are no more Madonnas or Mariah Carey’s as they existed in pop culture in the past. There are no more Taylor Swifts as she previously existed. In the past, “Taylor Swift” was what Big Machine Records wanted her to be. Through the power of social media and streaming to an extent, Taylor was able to escape that. She now talks politics and says what she wants.

Just look at Olivia Rodrigo, the so called “new Taylor Swift”. In reality, because Olivia is coming up in social media and streaming, she has a totally different experience than Taylor had. Olivia already says a lot of what she wants and talks about how she doesn’t want to be exploited. She makes her own persona.

Adele, given her personality and her experience, actually liked it in the past when artists were more remote and less accessible.  Many would probably prefer the new celebrity industry, but not Adele. Adele had all the benefits of the old industry without any of the bad parts.

Having a bigger peak (but not by a lot) doesn't necessarily guarantee a bigger career though, as we've seen with too many artists to name. An album that debuted with such a large bow struggling to spend a year on the Billboard 200 is giving a certain album teas.

She will sell out Vegas. It’s not hard to. But she’s not going to be the ‘industry’ she once was.

And she can deny all she wants that’s not what she was after, but 30’s rollout was very calculated up until Vegas where it all fell apart. She loved being IT and it’s almost super unlikely she will be moving forward. It’s a shame but she’s let Hollywood change her and once you let the world feel like it revolves around you, that’s when things like Vegas happen that creates a public image you can’t shake.

30 and Oh My God literally started falling off the charts straight after the Vegas mishap.

girl youre fave is doing amazing with her overrated new abum and breaking alot of records and stuff.. why are you focusing on others, trying to gloat?

and yes she does :ace:

We already know that the era was smaller than we expected it to be

the thing that she said, weren't disproven  - she also literally got the biggest first week sales too

(tbh we should've expected her to not do as good..since phys are constantly dying (her stronger market),streaming is growing (her weaker market) and vinyl is getting a revival (something she is doing good at))

Anyways, I am surprised Swifties are still going on about her?
Isn't Taylor aiming for a 1M first week?

Go talk about the achievements she is getting in the streaming era, why still mad about a woman who was in a competition with your fav with just 2 eras.

Yall werent as mad at Katy, when the feud was much more active..

The lead single sounds exactly like the old Adele, which bores many people.

The album does not sound so much like the old Adele, which also upset many people.
