Did Adele overestimate her demand?

Featured Replies

Back in November 2021, the UK songstress remarked that Ed Sheeran should be scared about the release of her upcoming album being around the same time as 'Equals'. In the same month, she also boldly asserted that her and Drake are a dying breed in the music industry, adding that "there will never be that many of us again at the top doing it the way we were doing it."

Numerous sources have reported that the album sent vinyl manufacturers into overdrive after more than 500k vinyls of 30 were pressed, leaving many artists waiting in line nine months as a result. Adele herself has dissatisfaction at this, ignorantly saying to BBC “so many CD factories and vinyl factories, they bloody closed down even before COVID because no one bloody prints them anymore”.

Fast forward a year later, 30 has already departed the UK albums chart and is hanging by a thread on the Billboard 200. Do you think Adele and her label overestimated her demand in 2021?

honestly everyone kind of did.  hurricane adele ended up being a flop tropical storm

it for sure wasn't a category 5 hurricane, but it was a category 4 hurricane

Well, we know she did, right? In the US 30 is certified 3x Platinum but wasn't even at 2 million units consumed by the time of certification. It's still only at 2.5 million units and has sold maybe 250k pure this year... so that's like 850k copies just sitting on retail shelves? Yeah, that's a pretty serious overestimate.

Still baffles me how her label got away with this, like? :hoetenks:The way they rushed to certify it everywhere in its first 3 months thinking the album would quickly reach the thresholds, only for it to stall miserably after the Vegas debacle and OMG failing to take off :rip:

it got shipped but it got shipped back

Adele is overconfident about how much the GP was willing to stand by her and swapped her previous relatability for snobbiness with her comments about her music and sales.

People liked Adele for her relatable lyrics and personality. Once she loses what people liked her for, she was guaranteed to go downhill.

She was overconfident in that she went fishing after releasing. With hype like Adele's, capitalizing on it can make it even bigger. She felt way more present for the 25 rollout, and Hello was arguably a bigger hit. She was very much a dinner table conversation at the time, too, whereas I feel for 30, she was far more on the D/L. I mean, the 30 ads all over the world didn't really have her name on them, only the fans really knew those were for Adele. The GP probably needed to be more informed of her return. If you weren't paying attention at all, you might think all she dropped was Easy on Me and disappeared. Plus, the Vegas debacle was an awful mistep.

And at a rate of about 33% it seems. If the certification is to be believed, and her label didn't just doctor their books to purchase a better certification, then some super quick math with HDD's sales numbers tells us that roughly a third of all physical copies of 30 produced for the United States remain unsold to this day. Assuming zero pressings or CD production since the beginning of the year, of course.

Why can’t Taylor and Adele fans be friends like :monkey: Yall make it miserable to like both of their music on here.

The material was very lackluster. If she had come with something stronger then the era would've lasted more than the 1st single.

A catastrophe :rip:

It was her "A New Day Has Come" era - still successful and among the top 5 biggest sellers of the year globally with a global smash but an obvious decline from her previous outputs

No; the demand was there. The quality wasn’t.

This. EOM did a massive 19M streams first day. But, the song didn't live up to the hype. Between its release and the album, the hype for an Adele comeback got cut in half.

That being said, I do think that if she had pulled a Taylor and teased an album but with no lead single, she could've done bigger numbers. I strongly doubt she comes close to midnights 185M, especially with a mere 12 tracks, but probably +80M :celestial5:

To be fair, CD’s are borderline Obsolete now. Only Taylor and BTS fandom can still make a major profit off of them. Nobody is going to record stores to buy CD’s in 2022? most cars and Laptops can’t even use CD’s anymore. So as far as actual physicals, I think this is the last year we will see them.

but anyone that thinks Adele isn’t in demand is delusional. Even with a forgotten album, 30 was still one of the biggest albums of this decade. She is still a main contender. 30 is just meh

Everyone but me. I’ve been saying she’s a hasbeen fad for years now.

It wasn’t at all?? It’s only at 6.3M units and already slowed down big time on steaming. It won’t be Top 50 for the decade.

It seems she did.

OT: The GP definitely overestimated Adele's quality.
