The way streaming algorithms work nowadays mean that if a song reaches a certain level it takes forever to drop in popularity. And radio holds onto songs way, way, way longer than it used to because less people are listening to radio so it takes more time for songs to 'burn'.

 

80s synthpop revival seems to have hit the sweet spot of songs that can appeal to multiple audiences and people don't get tired of. "Blinding Lights", "Stay" and now "As It Was" all fit that. We will see more in the next few years I am sure.

 

In practice though it doesn't mean these songs are the biggest hits of all time. They don't feel nearly as big as some of the biggest smashes of the 2010s decade like Somebody That I Used to Know and Uptown Funk!, which were legitimately inescapable. I just spent the summer between Canada, Spain and the UK, bars and clubs galore, and literally only heard "As It Was" ONCE and it was because I played it

How music operates has changed to be honest. As It Was really doesn't even feel like it a major hit. The whole top ten is seemingly who has the biggest niche streaming fanbase.

At least Blinding Lights and Stay felt HUGE and inescapable as well (and I actively avoided Stay, can't stand that song  )

Yeah As It Was sticks out like a sore thumb  Pretty much every other song here is super iconic or attached to a cultural phenomenon like Diana's death. OSD is probably the most forgotten.

it's pretty easy to see why it's so big 

The way he sings the whole thing in one single note can't think of a more monotonous, unexciting hit song

The 2020s is the decade of nostalgia porn. Everyone is longing for better times and this song just exudes that energy ‘you know its not the same as it was’. It’s dreamy, starry and longing for a better time. It makes sense why it blew up so hard

Not a fan of Harry, but the song is kind of nostalgic and has an excellent vibe

I think people will remember Blinding Lights and Levitating/Don't Start Now more when it comes to 2020s disco/80s inspired music

 

As It Was is lucky that the charts are at an all time low. Watermelon Sugar will be Harry's signature hit as it still is inside the Top 100 of Spotify almost 3 years later

A lot of times this answer is simple: people really love this song.

 

I was traveling all summer and heard it EVERYWHERE. In London, in Puerto Rico, here in LA. I don’t like it but clearly millions and millions of people do.
