I've not seen it mentioned in a couple of years, which is strange considering how acclaimed it was. Even nominated for AOTY. Just stumbled upon it again this morning and Screwed is still giving, but the album somehow feels like it was left behind. Do you agree? What happened?

It's overshadowed by how good EL and Archandroid are

A great album. Music is always constantly coming out so sometimes it can be forgotten but not in a bad way. Still love the album. I wish she was not in Bad Boy because that album had SINGLES that deserved to be huge.

I'd say Make Me Feel is remembered among music fans, but the rest is forgotten, yeah, and it definitely did not deserve the rapturous acclaim and an 87 on MC. I feel like it got acclaimed for its political themes which did not age well imo. A lot of "Resistance" media from the first two years of the Trump era (2017-18) about things like the Mueller report feel cringe now, like Janelle singing "the devil made a deal with Russia", even though Screwed is one of the better tracks.

 

The production on that album was pretty subpar and much less timeless than The Electric Lady and ArchAndroid.

Kinda, maybe outside of Make Me Feel though I think that's more remembered. Idk why. I think people either outright didn't like it as much as TA/TEL or liked it in 2018 and then suddenly hated it.

 

I admittedly like it less than I did in 2018 but I think it's solid. Unpopular opinion but I probably prefer most of DC to most of the second half of TEL.

Yes, it has not aged as well as her other albums

one of my favorite album of the 2010s decade… since it wasn’t necessarily commercially successful i don’t think you can really measure how well it’s regarded until quite some time after its release (to gauge how it influences other things sonically)

Screwed is still THAT song. Regularly on rotation. 

 

Unfortunately the era itself was a non-event and nobody really uses the record outside of pop heads. 

Idk why people drag it so much, like yes it's definitely her worst album but all her albums are amazing it's not like she can create a The ArchAndriod quality project every time. I do think Dirty Computer was a disappointment for her though as she went in a more pop direction and this was really given budget too with the whole movie but she still couldn't break out of her niche and it did about the same as Electric Lady on release. Jenelle has never had the massive mainstream success she deserves and really only The ArchAndroid was remembered for a long time after release. 

 

Anyway the album is great. Crazy, Classic, Life, Take A Byte, Screwed, Django Jane, Pynk, I Like That, So Afraid all amazing songs.

I feel like some fans may look down on it because it sounds a bit more pop-ish compared to her previous work, but it still is one of my favorite albums of 2018.

the quality is there and its a great album but it didnt really stick 

I feel like it is, I had totally forgotten about it until seeing this thread lmao

 

you don't really see it being referenced or written about etc. but it has some great songs

excellent lyrics and visual but forgotten instrumental choice, it was made for very specific theme and overall as background music on casual occasion is 6/10 at best.

 

yet im still not over the album every now and then, especially pynk
