It's not about boxing her into certain genres, it's the fact that if you shuffled her discography you would have a hilariously random experience.   Ready for It..., to the 1, to Shake It Off

  • Katy, Adele and Britney still smashing the poll.

Ready for It..., to the 1, to Shake It Off, to All Too Well, to Should've Said No, to False God, to Better Than Revenge, to willow, etc. is an insane amount of whiplash not just in genre but in subject matter, sound, and presentation that you wouldn't get if you shuffled Ariana, Adele, Katy, Britney, etc.'s discographies.

That can be said about anyone except for Adele really. Hot as Ice, to One Kiss from You, to Mmm Papi, to Everytime, to Passenger, to Shadow, to The Beat Goes On, etc. This Britney experience is more random than any Taylor shuffle experience could ever be! :cm:

Are you kidding me with Xtina? She has NO album that sounds like another she did. Britney and Katy have explored far more sub-genres. So yeah, Ariana it is, easily.

Take off your stan glasses for once, Xtina's albums all sound the same hence ppl became tired of her sound in a short period of time.

me voting for everyone minus my fave since this is a thread where you just vote for the ones you hate

You can't be for real while also saying Ariana Grande has any sort of musical versatility :dies: Back to Basics sounds nothing like Christina Aguilera, which in its turn sounds nothing like electropop-heavy Bionic and Lotus, which are her only two albums that can be said they sound similar. It's not a sweetener-thank u, next-positions situation where all three albums might as well be from the same exact recording sessions lol

I love Britney, and she wasn't in my top 3 least versatile like Adele Katy and Ariana were, but you're kidding me if you think Shadow and Everytime aren't just pop ballads, or that the rest of those songs aren't just pop songs :rip: Even the rock songs she has covered on her studio albums have been turned into pop songs -- she's a bit of a one trick pony. Blackout was her only slightly different album and even that was still just pop music at its core.

No this is insane, people are tired of Xtina because she's all over the place and takes long breaks between albums just to come back with a bunch of unfamiliar sounds :rip: I love Xtina BECAUSE of how different her discography is. Back to Basics, Lotus, and Liberation alone is the type of versatility some artists spend 2 decades chasing. Let alone her debut and Stripped.

They're all different sounding albums. Just because one or two songs in each albums share the same genre doesn't mean all the albums are the same. Sweetener is a more experimental pop album, TUN is heavily trap influenced, while positions is more RnB leaning. There's a reason why Ariana's bodies of work are much more acclaimed than Xtina's and one of it is her versatility.

I mean, it's not like the songs you mentioned aren't variations of pop either. Taylor was always branded as "country pop" after all. I see Taylor's biggest versatility strength in the folklore and evermore lyrics/themes, but even before that, the songs were all about either the broad sphere of love, or herself as a celebrity. And that was completely fine: she's a songwriter, she talks about her experiences.

Adele
Britney
Katy
...then probably Ariana. Musically she has a lot of potential, she just needs to explore outside her comfort zone.

It's not always a bad thing though. Britney, for example, may not be versatile but she was certainly very good at what she does. Her discography has brought us some of the best pop music in their respective decades.

You're pointing out hair thin differences :dies: Ariana has never done anything apart from dance-pop and urban-pop. Least versatile together with Adele by FAR.

Anyone not voting for Adele is automatically invalid.  Every other artist has at least experimented with other styles.

This literally can be applied to most of the girls in the poll if you divide the genre like that. :toofunny2:

I don't really think of Should've Said No, Mary's Song, Tim McGraw, Picture to Burn, as any kind of pop songs. Her debut is pretty heavily country, it's just that Fearless came along as a pop-country crossover and since then, a lot of country music leaned into that sound and now her debut + Fearless seem like any other country and pop album. But there's a huge difference between Our Song, Bad Blood, and happiness, just to cherry pick 3 songs that are all about 7 years apart from each other.

I'm not gonna say Taylor is the -most- versatile when I think Madonna, Miley, and maybe Beyonce or Xtina deserve that honor in terms of pop artists, but to me she's nowhere near the least. Country-Pop in and of itself is two completely separate genres being blended into one, it's like saying a rapper who makes dance music (Azealia) is not versatile when, by virtue, she's versatile for blending two genres that usually don't go together.

I'd say Katy isn't at all versatile when it comes to her image, but her music, while being all pop, has had influences from everywhere... which is why she's always criticized for having albums that are too all over the place lol

If Katy is considered versatile because of doing different styles of music (and not all of them well) then Ariana and Mariah are definitely versatile because they’ve explored other genres while still staying true to their musical roots. There’s more to versatility than just sonics, imo

Katy went from being Christian gospel singer Katy Hudson to girl-kissing rock chick. Then her Teenage Dream era alone is image change after image change for each single. (Candyfornia bimbo, bubblegum princess, inspirational fairy, nerdy teenager, a literal alien). Prism the same. With Witness she was a political woke soccer mom. That’s like a lot more image changes than a lot of these girls.

And musically she is one of the most diverse artists, no matter whether you like the output or not.

Eh, the trend of country pop started before Fearless. Carrie Underwood's debut album was branded as country pop from the get go, for example, and Carnival Ride was even more pop after Before He Cheats' crossover success. I don't think Taylor isn't versatile either, I think she knows what her lane is and she makes it as wide as she can. She's smart, she knows her limits and she exploits them well. She has a wide discography and she's explored less than others, that's it. Others who tried to push their boundaries completely failed.

California Gurls, Roar, Chained to the Rhythm, Never Really Over could all be on the same album.

ET, Dark Horse, Bon Appetit, Not the End of the World, could all be on the same album.

The One That Got Away, Unconditionally, Save as Draft, and What Makes a Woman could all be on the same album.

Katy has a problem with evolution if an entire decade of career has very minimal changes.

While I get your point about country pop being a broad but not necessarily innovative blend, I have to wonder if Ariana or Adele or Beyonce made a country-pop album, wouldn't that be used as some sort of proof of versatility? Take Kylie's Golden, for example. That came from an artist known more for dance pop, and as such, it's a testament to her versatility. But when Taylor goes from country-pop to dance pop or electro pop, it's brushed off as her knowing her lane and keeping it as wide as she can. To me, that's not quite fair :gaycat:

But of course I'm not here to change your opinion, I'm just enjoying the discussion.

I find Beyoncé to be very versatile! "Daddy Issues" from Lemonade is a country pop song, but she didn't need this to prove that point. The thing with Taylor is, she started out with country-pop, and then included it in her pop albums (This Love, New Year's Day - or, less obviously, other guitar-led pop songs), so she never fully left it.

If you were going to include Madonna, why not include Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Janet Jackson or other older MPG’s etc.

I don’t understand.

OT: Anyway, amongst the 21st century MPG’s…

1) Katy Perry

2) Adele

3) Taylor Swift

That said, Swift is comfortable with her style and exceeds in it hence the acclaim and all.

For me, versatility is albums having completely different sounds than other albums in the same artist's discography. I know people here like to say ""Ariana did reggae!!!" because of Side to Side's halftime percussion, but one individual track on one individual album that sounds pretty much the same as the previous album doesn't make the artist versatile in my eyes.

Meanwhile, Taylor's career for me is divided into 3 stages. The country-pop era, the POP star era of 1989, reputation, and Lover, all 3 of which sound pretty different from each other imo, and the folkmore era. I think she's always gonna have those country roots, but I think it's great she tries to push that to its limit and then some by weaving through pop, rock, and folk genres. I'm not gonna say she's got "False God as a jazz song!!" or "Don't Blame Me as electro-gospel!!!" when I can just say that folklore sounds nothing like reputation which sounds nothing like 1989 which sounds nothing like Fearless.

And unless she somehow makes like an R&B album she will probably never really shed the idea that her country-pop roots are tied to every album :gaycatina1:

Okay so you’re gonna ignore her work in gospel, country & rock music because she has a few song with a similar vibe? Because EVERY pop girl (and probably artist) has that.

You could make an album of Gaga’s Brown Eyes, You & I, Dope & Million Reasons.

You could make an album of Poker Face, Bad Romance, Marry The Night, Applause, John Wayne & Enigma.

doesn’t change that she has a very versatile discography with jazz & hip-hop records.

by your logic Sufjan Stevens who has a discography of over 21 albums doesn’t have a diverse discography because many of his songs sound like they could be from one album because that’s his style and because he has much music? Cher doesn’t have a versatile discography overall?

Katy has much more variety in her discography or image than Ariana lmao
