She had a major image change leading into the album which seems to manifest underperformance but her persona was framed as the same and nobody bought that act her team should not have used her relatability as a crutch in promotion her persona just isn't relatable to the general public anymore so commit to changing it. 

 

And, from her formula with the age based names ageism really set in she isn't new anymore and her old soul persona doesn't help, with a lead so formulaic Adele, it really undersold the album which is something of a progression literally anything from the B-side (tracks 7-12) as a lead would communicate that even if it needed a radio edit she even said " To Be Loved " lead was in the cards to launch the era the speaking interludes and overlong songs were not necessary to the general public sending her comeback single to number #1.

 

Her label and management got really complacent with her formula working still and the idea she is too big to fail that even with changes to the music market Billboard, streaming and more.

 

It's so obviously clear in the era ending completely mismanaged in the performance of " Oh My God " where the obvious single " I Drink Wine " has the music video filmed then the residency debacle ruined her likeability searing the new LA diva wine mom Adele persona into the general public minds and the radio silence then ensued.

Whilst a lack of evolution and laziness are part to blame, it all comes down to this. 
 

Celine, Mariah, Whitney all remained somewhat humble, with a hint of arrogance, even in their legend stages after selling millions upon millions. 
 

It might the Tottenham in her, but she portrays an invincible complex at present like she could become a four-trick pony. 

Given the nature of the material Adele produces and career trajectory she was expected to have a frontloaded career but long break(s) made it more severe. 

If the '30' album was released in 2019 I could see Adele pulling over 10-12M SPS overall. I also think that 30 numbers will be her standard for the next eras to come. But again she takes long break so it can be misleading. 

choosing omg over idw was a mistake, but 30 was still the best selling album of 2021 so nothing went wrong

it's about 8M SPS now and there's still singles, Vegas and of course Grammys that can push the overall SPS to 10M.

She has not promoted the album in the US at all since release and barely done any promo elsewhere. The album is full of 5-6 minute songs. Like.

I mean to be fair folklore wasn’t promoted at all in the US either and that became a smash on streaming. So clearly the people are just not interested in the music this time around otherwise it would’ve had better longevity  those first week and first month sales were on name recognition alone

Easy on Me is a smash on streaming, setting different records not to mention it will be 1 billion soon in a few days.

 

the problem is that the 4 ballads on the album are over 5 minutes long, anyway Adele's strength is with the GP and not the fanbase, we cant expect the GP to stream such songs when they are expecting Hello or Someone Like You

 

no wonder Easy on Me is a smash because it's like Hello or SLY.

Is it really close to 8M SPS? Source? I mostly use Chartmasters and they have not updated 30 whole SPS.
